Hi, i'm still new to civfanatics and play civ4 not so often because now I'm in grade 12 and must devoted my time with civ to the university admission preparation...
I have played civ4 for almost half a year, though not so often, and i'm not saying that i'm that really good....
This week I have played a 18civ/terra/huge/normal game as Bismarck leading germany, and I got outexpanded by my neighbors Monty and Joao, and of course, they declare war on me, along with majority of Buddhist in the game...
My game turned to disaster, mostly because of my inept in diplomacy  I need help!!!
(I can't figure out how BTS AI do diplo like that, and my trial at forming triangle diplomacy utterly failed and pissed everybody in the world off... )

I have 2 guesses on the cause. Either an AP crusade against you, or the BTS AI's greater tendency to bribe other civs into war with them. The latter is very noticeable compared to vanilla and warlords bribing by AIs.

Forget diplomacy you just need an army that can spank any 3 other civs and you are fine, When fighting this kind of defensive war, things can seem hairy, but after eliminating the offensive stacks on a front, you can generally press that front and expand into all rivals. I was playing a similar game, and managed to go from 6th to first score very quickly simply because of the AI being bribed and slamming countless troops into my defenders, veteran troops inside city walls just seem invincible after a while. Also attacking a tech leader is a bad idea as they have hard currency with other civs, attack a backwards civ first if you simply wish to acquire more territory, then be prepared to pound whoever they vassalize to into oblivion as soon as you have plundered their lands.
