[BtS] Amra's Modpack v3 for Beyond the Sword

Download, place, load mod, play game--CRASH, ILLEGAL OPERATION NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo

I'm loving this mod so far, but it's kinda hard to plot out strategies with the added techs and the new civs.

I'm still not quite sure what Collins of Ireland is best suited for, but with some work I might be able to get a strategy down for him.

Couple of things, i couldnt get the Archery Barrage/Bombardment from Archers to work right away on enemies. And could you PLS get rid of the Blue Star Flag for America and use R/W/B, thx.
And its take about 7 minutes to load??

Took a bit of experimenting but I think I found the best strategy for Collins.
He's perfect for a peaceful religious victory.
His starting techs put you in the lead for both important wonders (Pyramids, Stonehenge, maybe Great Wall) -and- an early religion.
Playing on Noble difficulty at marathon speed on Continents (goody huts turned off), I ended up founding -3- religions.
If it wasn't for a certain Byzantine leader I woulda won too. I already had 25% of the world under Christianity by the time Theocracy became available.

*reads Almighty's posts about Collins.*

Wow, I've never really put that much thought into Civ...though I'm starting too I'll admit. I'm liking the Trojans, good market, and Hector's defensive combined with the Apollonian guard (received with Engineering, therefore castles) turns your civ into a defensive behemoth. Especially if you luck out and get the castle quest.

Also, I think I finally had my first MAF. Was modern age with the Scots, and was at war with the Egyptians (wanted to try out those cool looking tanks. I'm a sucker for civs with custom skins for their armor. And I got the event that gives me a free excuse for war.). All of a sudden, a couple of error windows popped up and screamed at me, and it took nearly 5 minutes to close out of Civ. Anyways, I had more-or-less won already, all I had to do was grab victory, so I'm not really upset about it.

Did some research about Bulgaria and Thracians, so here's what I suggest for Bulgaria's second UU and UB, with a bit of background info:

Unique Unit: Rhomphaia wielder: The Rhompaia was a weapon used almost exclusively by Thracians that was influenced by the Dacian Falx. It was longer, and less curved than the Falx, and used more as a pole than an axe.
-Axeman with 6 strength, and free Guerrilla 1 promotion (Thracians were famous for their mercenaries, which, while a bit on the expensive side, were well known for being especially fierce fighters in rocky or hilly terrain.)

Unique Building: Kozluduy Nuclear Power plant: Was a massive power plant that made Bulgaria the leading power exporter in Eastern Europe until it was shut down. Gives a :gold: bonus (at least 10%) in addition to providing safe power (not counting meltdown chance).

Balancing issue: The bonuses for the LNG plant (Natural Gas plant, that's just what I call Natural Gas) should be reduced. Right now there is no real reason to use any power plant other than the LNG one once you get Ecology and have a source of LNG. Even the Japanese don't really have a point in using their Shale plant once that point hits because the LNG gives the same :hammers: bonus without the unhealthiness of a coal plant. I think the point of the power plants was to provide power, and therefore :hammers:, at some cost. Coal cost health, Nuclear costs the chance of a meltdown, Hydro plants have to be built on rivers. The LNG plant has no downside, just a slightly more expensive pricetag.

...Actually, that gives me an idea. Maybe have the LNG plant give only a 5% :hammers: bonus, and have it increase the maintenance of the city by about 5 or 10%, and/or have it have a small chance of blowing up the city (same effect as being bombed). There have been some rather bad LNG explosions in the past. I can't find what town it happened in, but on one episode of "Modern Marvel's" "Engineering Disasters", they covered a town in America where a storage tank at an LNG refinery started leaking, and Natural Gas leaked throughout most of the town overnight through the sewers (since methane is heavier than air), causing the whole place to go up like a bomb in the morning.

What you describe here is not a MAF. It looks like a python exception (Unless you don't have displaying them turned on). If you got these messages right after you got the one for the event it might be something wrong with this event. It will help if you can tell the exact error messages you got. Also you may be able to continue your game if you turn off python exceptions.

I'm experiencing the gigantor arcology bug. I've found it in other mods but the fixes for those require deleting a folder that doesn't exist in this mod ( mods\mod's name here\assets\art\structures\stable.) Apparantly a bad graphic from the ethnic artstyles mod. Anyone here have a solution for this? The graphic blocks many plots and I'm too fussy to automate my workers. ;)

Thanks!

P.S. Aside from the occasional MAF there have been no game stoppers. The MAF's are very infrequent, and I have Azureus Vuze in the background drawing memory the whole time as well. Thank you Amra for a very well put together and entertaining mod. :goodjob:

Nah, it was several turns after getting that event, I had already crossed the sea and had begun crushing the Egyptians by the time I got the errors. My laptop is known to overheat and cause errors on Civ during the late game, so I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a MAF.

A MAF will specifically read :

Error : Memory Allocation Failure

If it didn't, it wasn't :) ... at least that's what my intermittently reliable brain tells me. -edit

Oh, ok, it wasn't a MAF than. It was another random crash, not necessarily brought about by the mod.

Still, I'm loving this mod so far.

It should be noted that while I came off really confident about that last statement, I don't know with 100% certainty that it's a fact.

I really should have plopped an " I think " in there somewhere :)

Btw, it's a good thing in a way if your error isn't a MAF. The nature of your bug might be discovered and squashed for good. MAF's are trickier to tame. I think it was Kalimakhus who described it in detail a while back. MAF's are due to a memory leak - the game asks your computer for more memory and hoards it until you run out. The reason it happens with bulkier mods, I believe, is that there's more going on. More functions require more memory. If Civ used a static cache of memory instead of a steadily growing one, MAF's wouldn't exist.

Moral of the story: it's not Amra's fault!! 8-)

FATAL_ERROR
Memory Allocation Failure - Exiting Program
Reason: Bad Allocation

Loading a saved game, during the game, if you go back to the main menu and load, it still does it. Does happen at the start of a new game sometimes, but after a few hundred turns it always does it.

Non during game sofar.

Spell Checking:

Technologies:

Mining (The POPUP with the quote)

Somewhere in the text it says
"in the earth"
i thought it may look better as
"within the earth"

Sorry thats a bit vague, i just got a bunch of scribbles here, lol i should have got more info.

Tool Making (The POPUP with the quote)
"grinding tools agains other stones"
Should be
"against"

Tech Advisor has no exit button, i'm sure there was one on the normal version (will check tommorrow) be nice to have one, not used to pressing enter, i just like clicking =P.

Just thought i'd help out getting rid of errors, good mod though, thumbs up! :goodjob:

Also on another note, anyone know of a way to give forts a Zone Of Control, a border, 2 squares like a city all directions? i've looked at other mods, but i don't want other bits, i would just like:

A Zone Of Control (1 Square all sides) with 1 unit in. (Like a a newly built city)
A Zone Of Control (2 Squares all sides) with 2-3 or more units in.
1 gold or more maintenance cost (1 would be best i think)

EDIT: Maybe wooden forts, for early fort building?? and some outposts like there was on Civ3?, good too see who goes where.

Thats it, i would make if some showed me how, then maybe amra could add it :P

Reason? i hate spamming cities, i like to control 20-30 cities Max, but i like alot of civs playing at the sametime :).
I can just build forts so i don't need a city in the middle of nowhere just to stop the enemy building there.

Besides thats what they were originally for, making a border and controlling it. :)

I get MAFs when I start new games, espeically after exiting one to start another.

I don't play more than a few turns because I'm not really in the mood for it and have ADD as a result.

Well, I gotta admit, I'm loving this, and I love the fact that the great Amra listened to me on the corporations, but I didn't quite like his fix...So here's my v2 corporation XML file.

Changes:

Sid's Sushi: Now takes wine (to marinade the fish in), competes with Duff (over wine and rice) and Cnc (over wine).

CnC Pharmaceuticals: Replaced spices with Wine. Now competes with Duff and Sushi (previously had no competition, which is bad).

Civilized Jewelers: Now takes Ancient Civilization (for inspiration). Therefore competes with Amra.

Amra Antiques: Now only gives 0.5 :commerce:, 1 :science:, and 2 :culture: a resource. Wanted to replace stone with Gold to make it compete with the Jewelers (have them selling the expensive antiques, or imitation antiques), but didn't want them competing with both Created and Mining. Still thinking about that idea though...

Hello Everyone,

Sorry I haven't been around but I was out of town last weekend and then stepped away from here for a few days to catch up on work & the real world. Apparently, a few problems have popped up as well as the "mythical next patch" for Beyond the Sword.

I will be updating this to BtS v3.17 (both Basic & Advanced versions) and will also look into the other errors that have been mentioned. Obviously, this will take prioroty over adding a 2nd UU & UB, those things will come later.

I'm at the end of my work lunch break right now so I will have to respond in detail to some of the messages above later tonight.
