BtS Lag/Freeze - Unplayable

Initially when I got Vanilla I had to make some adjustments b/c the graphics weren't displaying right (invisible leaderheads) but once I got that fixed it was mostly fine. After the expansion packs occassionally I'd run into problems where the text in the 'choose next building' or 'choose next tech' screen would be messed up but that was usually rectified by just exiting to the main menu and then opening the game again.

However, I'm now running into another graphics related problem. This time I haven't been able to find a solution.

Everytime I go to start a new game I get a few turns in before the screen goes completely black for a few seconds and then recovers back to the game. I continue to play and then not to long after that the game starts to lag between turns. A few more turns and the game completely freezes all together. By turn 10 it's all over. Sometimes I can shut it down via task manager but more often than not I have to turn the computer off manually and re-boot.

I've downloaded the latest patch. I've downloaded the latest DirectX. I've played with reduced graphics. I've tried activating 'Gamer Mode' on my SpySweeper, shutting down uneeded programs, and disconnecting from the internet while playing. I've updated my video driver, downloaded Windows Updates, and added a gig of RAM as well.

I have concerns that something has gone wrong with my video card. Even though the computer says it is working properly I have similar problems with SimCity 4. Although, in that instance the graphics of the entire screen get scrambled and and it usually crashes to the desktop citing an "igfx error". Since Civ4 was not orginally affected I assumed that it was attributed to too much custom content trying to run on SC4. However, now that Civ4 is affected I fear it is either Vista or hardware related (and I really can't afford a new laptop :( ).

Here are is a summary of my system/display info....

Please help.

open the civilizationIV.ini and change all the below values from 0 to 1 or 1 to 0 (just the opposite of what they start out with) - this will make things look ugly but does it help at all?

; Dont show the game background during movies - may speed up movie playing
HideMovieBackground = 0

; Allows some memory savings *** ALT-TAB WILL NO LONGER FUNCTION ***
MemSaver = 0

; Don't skip frames if falling behind
BinkNoSkip = 1

; Copy entire image each frame, not just dirty pixels
BinkCopyAll = 1

; Show movies using hi-color, not true-color (may be faster)
Bink16Bit = 0

; Copy ever other scanline during movie playback (faster)
BinkInterlace = 0

I made those changes and was able to get in about 30 turns before things started to really lag between turns again. However, I did not notice that nothing looked 'ugly' so maybe I didn't execute the aforementioned changes correctly.

A few more things I've noticed is that the original problem was primarily occurring in 'Advanced Start' mode. Regular game playing mode seemed to get me a little farther but still was not without its problems.

Also, there were a couple times I tried to play and couldn't even get it up and running. It would lag/freeze on the "In the beginning..." loading screen/video.

The most frustrating part is that this game had run fine for a while before this all started happening. I'm beginning to become suspicious that if there wasn't a Windows and/or Device update that hasn't messed it up.

When I went to install the update from Intel it wouldn't work...or at least it said it didn't. I ended up with an error message notifying me that it had failed. However, when I go back to Intel's site and re-run the software that checks if the driver is up to date it says it is. I confirmed this by running another DxDiag. The driver version listed is indeed the updated one.

Did it fully install despite the error message?

*EDIT: I tried to play a game after the failed driver update and after about 8 terms it crashed to the desktop citing an igfx error.

Went back and ran the driver update install again and this time it appeared as if it had finished successfully. I re-started the computer and noticed my graphics were back to the basics b/c my driver had been disabled. I enabled the driver and after it re-installed itself I ran another dxdiag to see what version it was running itself as now. Sure enough it reverted back to the old version. It shouldn't be this hard to update a driver. Why does it have me running in circles? Is their something wrong with the driver or is there something else that is preventing this from updating properly?

EDIT: I have also contacted Intel about this issue.

in some cases you need to completely uninstall the graphics driver before installing a new version

Okay. That seemed to solve the driver update problem. I started to play a game...got about 135 turns (on marathon mode) in before I got the black screen followed by the lag. I also noticed I'm still unable to start a game in the 'Advance Start' mode. I might try to uninstall and then re-install the game as my next course of action.

if you do that do the below... and make sure to run all installers as admin (right click and choose run as admin):

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Civ4
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Civ4, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.17 (download it fresh from here).

Re-installed the game and still having the same problems. I'm starting to run out of ideas.
