Memory Allocation Error

CIV4: BTS
Platform: WinXP Pro
RAM: 3GB
Graphics card: Radeon 9800
Graphics settings: All low
Screen resolution: 1280 x 1024

I have had this one for ages. Every time my save files hit around the 1500kb mark, I keep getting memory allocation errors with a crash to disk. By the time it hits 2100kb, I will get only 1 turn of the game. On the second turn, when the city screens come up, I click on what to build, it CTD.

What is going on? This problem has been happening since Civ4 vanilla!

play smaller games (in terms of civs and land area)
get an extra gig of RAM and configure XP to 3GB
Switch to a 64-bit OS

pick your poison mate

But isn't 2200kb only 2.2Mb? 3Gb would be about 1000 times that?

I think I am missing something here...

EDIT: How do I configure XP to take 3Gb? I am thinking of changing my computer anyway, but I have a HD full of legacy stuff that I am afraid the new Windows won't run (MS is notorious for incompatability issues), which is why I was keeping my old WinXp.

Win 7 64 is great, so long as you install in C:\Games and not the default.

If you get Win 7 Pro or better, you can get Virtual XP for free to run your legacy stuff on.

If you are getting a new PC get at least a core i7 with 6GB of RAM or more.
