With El Nino as that is a regular event i might include a long and deadly el nino like the one we have in australia right now.

The second one is good.

How about a storm/fire that won't let units pass through a tile?
 
okay, i just got BtS yesterday, but i'd like to spend a week or two playing some games before i start any modding work.

anyhow, heres some more ideas:

1. While visiting [civilization] on a diplomatic trip, your highest ranking general was mocked by the young son of the leader of [civilizaiton].

- Oh, too bad. -1 relations with civ


2. One of your best generals has decided to retire, and is settling down in [city]. Still, he is willing to help you in training troops and advising officers.

- +2 xp for units in [city] for a few turns

Event: Alien visit on ancient times


Prequisites to make it happen: Being building one or more wonders in the ancient era, to have at least one religion present in your empire.

"Oh, mighty one, lo and behold, since the gods have descended from heavens. Their celestial thrones can be spotted on [insert city where one of the wonders is being made]. Oh, great one, what shall we do about it?"

Option one: Nothing. We, mere mortals, should not interfere with the whereabouts of the gods.
Effects: None, obviously.

Option two: Send the army.
The gods are not always merciful to humans, you know...
You must send at least 3 military units to the city where the gods have been spotted. You lost 1 unit, but the other two gain +1 strenght. It seems that they have been impregnated by the god's aura, and thus aquired divine powers...

Option tree: Praise the gods! We should humbly offer them our treasures to gain the favour or the heavens!
Quite 200 of gold from treasury: You recieve divine help to finish your wonder! A 20% of the wonder's production is added!

Option four: Gave them everything we got! Sacrifice our people and may our blood satisfy the gods!
Lost 1 population in the city, -1 of happiness during 10 turns. The gods left us in the cold. However, that event lead to many legends and tales that were transmited trough generations (+2 of culture in the city).
 
This is a pretty good idea. I like what I've been reading so far on this thread. Here are a few samples of my random events.

Political Events: Random events involving political issues. Theses events involve switching from a democrat to a republican or people protesting against a war or confronting your leader about a conspiracy. All these events will never get old and don't get surprised if you see hundreds of these political events start popping up daily for the simple fact these are all events that happen everyday all around the world. So unlike the natural disaster events this will never get old because politics constantly change everyday which is what these events are based from. Everyday politics.

Event 1: Taxes are to high
Mr. President the great people of [Civ_Name] demand that you lower taxes. Many people cannot afford it and many choose not to pay it. What should we do?

Option 1: Who are they to demand anything! We will raise taxes just for that! +2 taxes from all cities.

Option 2: Okay I see how they feel. We will lower the taxes.

Event 2: Abortion laws
Sire, the women of our great civilization demand womens rights. They feel that they should do what they want with their body. Many of them want an abortion because they fear that they may die in child birth or may not be able to provide for the child. But at the same there are many people that oppose this and are against it. Many religious groups are saying this is a terrible idea and it is an abomination against god. On the other hand our science advisers seem to support abortion. They say it will greatly increase scientific research. What do you want?

Women deserve their rights and fetus' could boost our scientific research you say? Give me the papers I need to have the abortion law made legal.

Drink from the demons

Required: [city] should have access to Wine, Wheat or Sugar (maybe also Banana or Corn)
and [city] should have the state religion


Ever wondered why the governor of [city] is moaning and complaining every time you visit him? He probably went to one of the feasts downtown the previous night, celebrating the new harvest. These parties are certainly a lot of fun, but people complain these uncontrolled celebrations will end in chaos, crime and an awful hangover. What is your plan, Sire?

- Our people consists of smart students, good farmers and talented craftsmen. They do need a good booze when their work is done, there is nothing wrong with that. Now where are these parties? Maybe I'm just in time ...

Well, you are wellcome ^^ you have created a great tread and gave us a chance to materialize our ideas! Still, a commentary: I think that there are too much negative random events, we should counterbalance that somehow. Ok, here's another event:

The AIDS vaccum

Prequisite:
To have free market or enviromentalism as your civic, you should have discovered juridic person and medicine.

Sir, some of our private pharmaceutical corporations have developed a highly efficient vaccum against AIDS. However, there has been lot of social preassure to make this vaccum patent free in order to being able to offer a cheap treatment to the poorest members of society. What shall we do, sir?

Defend the rights of the corporation to hold the patent and commercialize it like any other medicine. Sorry, but this is a private property, you cannot get for free something that have cost millions to research. You get -2 to the relationships with every other civ, you get 1 extra unhappiness on every city for 15 turns. In turn, every hospital now generates +2 of gold and every lab +1.

Free the patent. The benefits of such a cure must reach everyone, not only a few privileged. Hospitals now generates +1 health, +1 health in every city, +2 to the relations with every other civ.
 
New palace wing
Requires: Writing, Aesthetics, only Renaissance or earlier


The palace of [capitol] has been expanded with a new wing. For what purpose should we use it?

- Invite the wisest men of [civ name] to the palace. Ask them to bring their books with them, to store in the new wing.

Palace +1 science

- Store city maps and other information about other civs.

Palace +1 ESP

- Hire guards around the wing and create a dungeon.

-2 gold per turn

The great dancing ball
Prequisites: You must have monarchy as your goverment, you must be on the Renaissance or earlier period.

Sir, the Princess have had an idea: What about organizing a royal ball? That could bring a bit of colour to her boring courtesan life.

No ball will take place. That is actually a frivolous and superfulous thing, the princess should learn a bit of humilty. Nothing happens.

Ok, go ahead.
You pay 75 of gold. Now, who shall we invite to the royal ball?

- Invite the local nobelty, only the finest ones might have contact with the Princess. The palace gives +1 extra happiness.

- Invite the commonners, may every honest [nationality] enjoy this ball! All your cities celebrate "we love the monarch" during 3 turns!

- Invite the most influential members of the country.
Poets, scientist, merchants... let our princess know the genious of our country. Your palace generates +1 GP point (artist).

- Invite the ambassadors of the foregin nations, so we impress them with our court splendor. +1 to the relationships of every foregin country.

The young daughter of your ruler has found to posess amazing skill in military matters. So amazing, in fact, it would not be unreasonable to make her your top general, despite her tender age! However, your own generals obviuosly object to this...

- Put her on the front lines! Those other generals are obviuosly envious. Having a powerful little girl lead our armies wouold drive far into our enemies' hearts!
+25% war wearniess in enemy cities, +2 xp in capital, -200 gold

- Well, screw our other generals, we could use her as a military advisor.
+4 xp for units in capital, -175 gold

- Er... sneak her in and pretend she's male. That should make her happy. -50 gold, +1 xp for units in capital

- Fine, i'll listen to the jealous generals. Too bad she's going to cry now... (nothing)


and another one:

(in city with a temple)

The ancient temple of [city] is very old, now, sire. Our advisors are thinking of doing something about the site.

- Turn it into an archaeological research center. (+25% science in city)
- Lets turn it into a tourist site and get money! (+25% gold in city)
 
Preq.: City with monastery, Industrial or earlier

Due to a religious revival, the [monastery type] in [city] has more inhabitants then ever!
This expansion means that the munks can deliver more services to this city.

1.
They should take more care of the poor and weak of [city]. Grow medical herbs in a herb garden to heal the sick and wounded.

[monastery type] + 1 health, units heal +10% faster

2.
Just write books and research new scientific subjects. Teach the children of [city] where we came from and where we are going.

[monastery type] + 2 beakers

3.
Convert more people in [city] to the religion of the monastery.

[monastery type] +1 :), +1 culture

The handsome son of your ruler has been found to be sleeping with the pretty daughter of the ruler of [civ]! Though both are highly respected, this is causing outrage!

- Why don't we arrange a marriage between the two? Hold a grand international celebration! (+2 relations with [civ], -100 gold)
- Banish the traitor! (-25 gold)
- Crud. Er... (-1 relations with [civ])


2. The nephew of your ruler has been sent as a governor to [city], and it seems he is actually making it prosper!

- Excellent... we just need more men like him. (+1 gold, +1 shield in city plot)


3. Quest: The recent development of a new technology, gunpowder, is heralding in a new era of military! If you are to make the largest army of gun-wielding troops, that would cause fear into the hearts of our enemies!

- Build 15 musketmen by the end of the reinessance. (Winner receives combat 1 and drill 1 for all gun units)
 
Quest: Marco Polo's trade route

Prequisites:
You must finish the quest on the renaissance or earlier. You must have a market or a commercial wonder in one of your cities.

Sir, we have heard marvellous tales about the mythic [insert the highest scoring civ that you haven't met yet] civilization. Travellers are telling us about its wonders. One of our more reputated merchant families, the Polo, wants to stablish a trade route with it.

Goal: Get one great merchant, and make it stablish a trade route in one of the cities of the misterious civilization.

If you do it so, you can choose one of the 3 following options:

Great! Now we can have acess to the marvellous luxuries of the far east! - You gain silk and spice in your capital (a la hollywood movies).

Do not let this stop here, we must use this to stable long and loyal trade ties with that civlization.
You get +3 relationship points with that civ, you gain 1 extra commercial routes in your 3 biggest cities, one in your capital.

May this glorious and prosperous travel serve as an inspiration to all our future traders!. Every marketplace gives +1 great people point (merchant).
