Anyone know what the payout for this quest is? I was assigned it back when I discovered Bronze Working and, nearly 300 turns later, and after I've ignored it for most of the game, I have Cavs and am wondering if it's worth it to conquer Russia to win it.

I saw a FAQ that says I get a bunch of copper-enabled units. Does that mean I'll end up with axemen when I win it? My tech is such that I'm playing with Infantry, Machine Gunners, and Cavalry right now. Also, how many units?

Thanks!

Yes. Assuming that it asked you to go after a copper plot, you will get axemen. Just upgrade them to Infantry or MG.

If, you are using Infantry, it could have expired by now.
It gives you 150 turns to complete the Greed Quest.

From ori's Random event list ( really, the search function won't bite :p ) :
Code:
Quest10:
	Greed
Prereq: BRONZE_WORKING AND lacking either of the following revealed resources: Oil OR Copper OR Iron OR Horse
Obsolete: if GrowthPercent for the current Game Speed number of turns have ellapsed (100 for normal)
	Active/Weight: 40/300
		Aim:
Declare War on the owner of the resource triggered, stay in war until you conquer the resource
Result:
1.get 0.5*default number of players for this world size+1 units (4 for standard) with the conquered resource as prerequisite
So , I pretty much expect that your quest is already expired ... and anyway, you would get a bunch of maces as reward :p

I tried googling with various search strings and reported the best information that I could find - a Gamefaqs page that was vague about a lot of stuff. Google also gave me topics on CFC but didn't give me that. Thanks!

Google: civ4 events list

It is practically the first one that pops up...

Hindsight is 20/20. I tried "Civ4 quest greed", "Civ 4 quest greed", "bts quest greed", "bts quest greed". If I had known a list about all the events in BTS would have had the detailed information I was looking for about a single quest I would have looked at the tiny little link that was offered. Apologies if I offended you.

You didn't offend me. On the contrary. I was just telling you the search string to put into Google :)

Mind you, those ellipses could have been better off junked.

Next to the event log is a quest log. If you open that up and see nothing there, the quest has expired.

One additional comment about invading Russia with "cavs": don't. Pick a unit not so easily owned by cossacks (e.g. riflemen).

Russia still has knights, and my production is pretty strong, probably averaging 4 cavalries each turn.

But now that I know the quest is only worth 9(?) units on a huge map (probably without experience too) I am going to ignore it and wait for tanks or modern armor to take them out. There's no way the quest reward is worthwhile after the first hundred turns unless it's a freebie for doing what you already planned to do.

Thanks again, everyone!

The 100 turns part must be weighed by game speed too.
I usually see 150 turns, but, I also, usually play on epic game speed.
Isn't marathon x3, so, 300 turns?
If you are on that game speed, it could still be available.
Alot depends on the situation.
You obviously, don't goto war for just a resourse, especially, one you nolonger need, to gain units that are obsolete.
But, if, you are already at war with Russia, and capturing cities to gain the resourse is possible in the time remaining, I would go for the free units and upgrade them, as others have said.
Otherwise, use them as city defenders in cities not near your combat borders.
Anyway, sounds like it has been a fun game.
Good luck!
:)

If you have cavs and Russia still has knights, IMO the iron is hot to strike, unless your army is pathetically small, in which case you didn't maintain a unit pump throughout the game. Or if there are diplo reasons for not invading (e.g., 6 other AIs in a defense pact or are "friendly" with Russia).

I tried this but Russia had a few huge stacks of war elephants that were able to regain some cities from me. I hadn't built enough infantry to keep the cities from war elephants.

So instead of restart and build more infantry I thought it would be better to reload an early save and improve my tech focus. I'm trying to accomplish what I mentioned to you in the Earth Challenge topic. If I tech to tanks as quickly as possible maybe then I can switch to an entirely war footing and successfully steamroll everybody. I suppose I'm compensating for poor war tactics, but right now I'm trying to learn how to balance research and war/expansion. I'm going to post another topic about it soon to ask for advice with that.

You have MG yet? Those mow down 'phants...

What AJ11 said, which also goes for infantry. What seems to be lacking here is quanity (to include garrisons to keep what you take) rather than quality.
