BTS will not load (INIT Engine)

I have a downloaded version of civ 4 I got from take2. I bought a retail version of BTS and tried to install it. I had trouble installing bts for a few days but I figured it out after reading posts from this web site. I uninstalled everything redownloaded civ 4 vanilla from take2(1.61). Then downloaded the 1.74 patch from trymeadia (took forever to find). Next I installed bts with no problems. When I try to launch bts it starts to load fine until it gets to where it says Init Engine the screen turns black and a windows message comes up and says it had to shut down. I downloaded the 3.13 patch installed it. Then I found the 3.17 patch and installed it. My direct x is updated. Everything else is updated also. I turned the starting movie off no luck. civ 4 vanilla loads and works fine. Windows XP

first off: the digital distribution of this game is messed up. There is the very real possibility that this will not work. Some of the digital versions are not compatible with cd/dvd versions
does the event log contain any other information? EventID or the like?
