Washington AD-1987-July Turn 1370.CivBeyondSwordSave
I wouldn't think it's a leaderhead issue, because I have been using this mod for quite a while and never experienced a crash. It's possible, of course. I could try opening the diplo screen of all leaders on the turn I provided and see if any cause a crash.
I wouldn't think so, the only thing I did was drop the mod's leaderhead folder into DOC's assets folder and merged. I'm not expert on the Civ 4 graphics system, but to me that would seem like it would be alright.
Hi, I've made an account just to try and get 1.15 to work on my new computer. Recently, I had to reinstall CivIV with Steam and I just got into the process of redownloading all of my old mods. The installer for 1.15 doesn't seem to put the game in correctly as I keep on getting a bunch of errors for misc files. Granted, the files are for Varietas Delectat but even if I ignore those warnings, the game will not launch at all and instead runs as a background process. I also tried installing the mod on my desktop and transferring it to the mods folder in the Steam directory for CivIV, but again no dice and it runs as a background program. Is there a release for 1.15 as a zip or rar file yet? I can get 1.14 to work if I use the version that's a rar file; overall I just think that the installer and Steam don't play well together. Thanks for the immense effort into this mod btw, I played this well throughout my childhood and I really want to get this to work before I head back to uni in the winter.
Hi, let me start with saying that I used to play Reality Invictus a lot. After I had to reinstall my entire rig, I recently only played CivIV BTS in the vanilla-most manner:
- Clean Operating System that is actually used for nothing else, gaming-wise.
- Steam installation, BTS installation, starting RFC, and up-and-at-'em.
Having heard all the great stuff about DoC, I now decided to give it a try.
SpoilerFirst try to install with default installer :
I first just ran the Installer with default settings, but I realized too late that it was the wrong path:
C:\Mods\RFC Dawn of Civilization
is the wrong one for sure. I moved the already installed files to the correct location:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword\Mods\RFC Dawn of Civilization
then I started the normal CivIV app and tried to locate DoC among the scenarios - it wasn't there.
I moved the installed files back to the C:\Mods\... folder, then successfully uninstalled the Mod on first try.
SpoilerSecond try... :
On my next try, I ran the Installer with the correct path (see above), but it prompted a seemingly serious warning at one point:
Because retry didn't help; I decided to ignore, but had the same issue with more files:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword\Mods\RFC Dawn of Civilization\Assets\Modules\Varietas Delectat\Art\Units\tamils\dravidian heavy footman\indiancholaheavyinfantrymanpaddedjacketgloss_128.dds
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword\Mods\RFC Dawn of Civilization\Assets\Modules\Varietas Delectat\Art\Units\tamils\dravidian pikeman\indiancholamediuminfantrycommonturbanpaddedarmor_128.dds
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword\Mods\RFC Dawn of Civilization\Assets\Modules\Varietas Delectat\Art\Units\tamils\dravidian war elephant\indianwarelephantlaterhowdahwoodleatherbox_256.dds
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword\Mods\RFC Dawn of Civilization\Assets\Modules\Varietas Delectat\Art\Units\viking heavy cavalry unarmored horse\vikingheavycavalryunarmoredhorse.nif
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword\Mods\RFC Dawn of Civilization\Assets\Modules\Varietas Delectat\Art\Units\[air]\[heli]\eurocopter tiger\camo1\tiger_md_damage_gunshiptexture_damtexture1.kf
[as above but with] ...e_damtexture2.kf ; ...e_damtexture3.kf ; ...e_damtexture4.kf ;
[as above but with] ...tiger\camo2\tiger... ...tiger\camo3\tiger... ...tiger\camo4\tiger... ...tiger\camo5\tiger... ...tiger\camo6\tiger... ...tiger\camo7\tiger... ...tiger\camo8\tiger... [each of these in the 1-4.kf instances]
[as above but with] ...\eurocopter tiger\french\tiger_md_dam... ...tiger\german\tiger... [each of these in the 1-4.kf instances]
[as above but with] ...\german\tiger_md_damage_tanktexture_damtexture1.kf [2-4.kf]
[as above but with] ...\leopard\tiger_md_damage_gunshiptexture_damtexture1.kf [2-4.kf ; also with ...tanktexture... again]
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword\Mods\RFC Dawn of Civilization\Assets\Modules\Varietas Delectat\Art\Units\[naval]\graf spee pocketbattleship\battleship_md_damage_boat_texture_damtexture1.kf [also 2-4.kf]
[as above but with] ...battleship_md_damage_bodygeometry_dam geometry1.kf [also 2-4.kf]
As it became tiring, I noted that the problems continued with some german and italian submarines, some heavy tanks (pzkpfw_vii_koenigstiger\kingtiger) and cars (rollsroyce armoredcar).
Note: These problems only showed up, when I installed in the proper folder in the steamapps directory; not when the installer unpacked into C:\Mods\... My assumption is that the problem lies in the length of these filenames. If all the other paths are shorter, you should aim to rename the longest ones. I hope it's that easy...
By now, I had installed and uninstalled the Mod several times (at first try, I aborted installation when the filepath error came, but I couldn't think of another workaround). The first full install where I really ignored all the "Error" Warnings about the Varietas Delectat however; the uninstall routine wouldn't clear out all files in the Assets folder, e.g.:
- ...\Mods\RFC Dawn of Civilization\Assets\Modules\Varietas Delectat\Art\Units\[air]\amiot350 bomber\amiot350.dds
- ...\Mods\RFC Dawn of Civilization\Assets\Modules\Varietas Delectat\Art\Units\africa\ceo\logos\ceo_cereal_fx.nif
- ... (those were not all, but it was no bother: I deleted them by hand)
SpoilerFinal success still had some hoops, though :
So, after all these errors with Varietas Delectat, I decided to leave VD out, and only install the rest of the components.
Yet, I had more (little) problems:
The shortcut that the installer creates, doesn't work properly, because for whatever reason, it links to the following path:
- C:\Civ4BeyondSword.exe mod=\RFC Dawn of Civilization
I had made sure I installed in the proper steamapps folder this time!
Instead of using the useless shortcut I just started CivIV normally, then selected "load a mod" under the "advanced" heading.
"RFC Dawn of Civilization" showed up alright!
I loaded the mod... but the intro screen didn't look like the RFC mod, but like the BtS vanilla.
I found this post however, and copied the entire content of the Mods\RFC-DoC folder into my C:\Users\<Username>\Documents\My Games\beyond the sword\MODS\ folder.

Welcome to the forums and thanks for playing. I think the errors you are running into are unrelated. The error messages are common in combination with Steam, because the lengths of the VD file paths in combination with the Steam app folder path are too long for Windows to handle.
Having to wait while Civ4 runs as a background process is normal. However, if you give it some time it will actually complete. You can accelerate the process by increasing the priority of the process with the task manager. In my experience this will be much faster with the second and further launches.
Just got back into DoC after a long break! Was playing 1.15 and was getting squashed by unhealthiness. Built a Park, had four towns being worked by my city, but no healthiness from the Park! It would be very helpful to have that healthiness... am I doin something wrong?
Great to see you back with DoC! Your post reads like you expect the health to show up next to the Park building (like e.g. for Aqueducts), but that's not the case. The Park building adds health to the town improvement on the tile, by default towns are -1 health on the tile, so before building the Park you should have seen -4 health from improvements in your city. With the +0.5 health from the Park it should have gone down to -2.
By the way, things have changed since then in the development version, where health is once again a bit easier to manage.

I'm enjoying the balance of health now. Before it seemed virtually impossible to have healthy cities unless you build every single health building and collect massive amounts of health resources. Now it seems it's something you have to consider but it's not a huge undertaking unless your city is huge.
Loaded an Argentine spawn to switch to the Mexicans. Ending the attached turn and hitting Yes to the switch prompt gives no effect, simply beginning my next turn as Argentina.
I found another bug with Varietas Delectat, again it's Great Generals only showing up as red blobs (see a few weeks back when I reported this for the Mongols), only this time it's the English Medieval/Renaissance ones.
My investigations revealed that while there's two different folders containing art for the modern skin*, the folder that according to "Modules\Varietas Delectat\XML\UnitArt\VD_CIV4ArtDefines_Unit.xml" is supposed to contain the Medieval one, "Modules/Varietas Delectat/Art/Units/English/English General (Medieval)", simply doesn't exist. This isn't just a matter of another spelling mistake, there's no folder that even remotely looks like it could be the one that should be here. ART_DEF_UNIT_GENERAL_MEDIEVAL_ENGLISH points to empty space, hence the red blob.
If the relevant graphics can not be found or acquired, the easiest solution would probably be to just use the default skin, i.e.:
In Assets\Modules\Varietas Delectat\XML\UnitArtStyles&CivInfos\VD_England_CIV4UnitArtStyleTypeInfos.xml replace
That should be a good enough solution until someone someday bothers to track down the apparently missing art.
Before the proper release of 1.16 it probably couldn't hurt to check if there's other civs that also share this problem.
*ART_DEF_UNIT_GENERAL_MODERN_ENGLISH points to "Modules/Varietas Delectat/Art/Units/English/English General (Modern)", which means "Modules\Varietas Delectat\Art\Units\english\english modern general", which seems to contain the exact same files, is redundant and can probably safely be deleted.
Also, it bothers me immensely that the XML consistently uses common slashes for file paths instead of backslashes.
