Building cities on resources

What happens if I settle a city on a resource instead of next to it? Do I loose it or does my city assimilate it? There are some areas on the map where it is more practical to build on a resource tile then next to it due to a lake, ocean, mountain etc...

It's yours immediately as long as you have the tech to use it (like calender). If not it will be yours as soon as you research the needed tech. It's a very good way to get lux or strategic resources fast and being unable to actually lose them through pillage of the tile.
