C2 AI tweaks?

I guess searching the forums is disabled and if someone could point me to a FAQ about this that would be great, too.

How can the AI be tweaked? I'm getting tired of winning, consitiently, at deity level because the AI is building banks and courthouses while I'm invading. The AI doesn't even seem to understand how to use terrain correctly (e.g., for defense).

Also, anyone know why the maps that are generated are usually one large contiguous continent (spread out all over the map, but, I can get to most of the landmass by ground). How do I make the game create maps with individual continents, more similar to reality?

Thanks.

Oh, and, great site.

Funny you should mention that. After beating the Civ2 AI for years, I've finally patched to the multiplayer version (MGE?).

And then today I was reading about how to setup multiplayer for simultaneous movement -- are many multiplayer games played this way?

And is there a way to tweak the AI? I remember hearing that it's possible, but, how to make it actually respond to threats better (though I do like when I inavade a city and it has a dozen improvements, hehe).

It sounds like you are using version 2.42.

The map generator for that version does not have the variation of MPG. Also, the AI in MPG is a bit more aggressive, so that may change your game play a bit as well.

True. I've been researching it and it looks like that's the only way (so far; I'm surprised with the many Civ2 players that someone isn't re-doing the AI).

Anyone heard of/used a thing called FreeCiv? I was reading about it on slashdot but haven't really looked into it too deeply.

You could chnge the priorities for the AI in the rules.txt, but I don't know of any way to make them, respond better.

Without the source code there's very little anyone can do about that.

There is something called Deity+1 though. You can edit the menu.txt and add extra options to the start-up menus (e.g. difficulty levels, barbarian activity etc.).

I don't know the details, but it has been thoroughly tested. You should try the Civ2 strategy forums over at Apolyton.net.

In any case, this hardly makes the AI smarter, it just lets it cheat a bit more than it already does.

And then of course, why not try multiplayer, to get some REAL competition?

Try this: http://www.freeciv.org

I've tried it once or twice... just try it and see for yourself.
