I think it should help, to give the save an talking name (not only ramses.sav like it is at the moment) like ramses_4000BC_egypt.sav or so. It's easier to check what is wrong.

I usually change Gnarfflinger of the Babylonians to Ramses...

I leave the date in so that the turn can be tracked.

That's what I do too. Just replace the name and civ with Ramses and keep the date.
like : Ramses, 3840 BC.
