I've this for a few hrs now, but couldn't find a positive yes or no. So I hope maybe you can help me out.

I lost my wallet and my only form of ID i had at the time was my military ID. And most places take it fine. But this one Bar wouldn't take it. They said they only take driver's licenses as ID.

Under state law here is the Acceptable Forms of ID:

* A valid, current driver's license issued by the Illinois Secretary of State's Office or any other State.
* A valid photo identification card issued by the Illinois Secretary of State's Office or any other State.
* Armed Forces Identification
* A valid U.S. passport or travel visa/passport issued by a foreign country containing the holder's photography.

Can a place public pick and chose what ID to take?

As silly as this would seem, would it be legally allowed to only take passports as valid ID, and only serve beer to those that had passports?

EDIT: I don't drink anymore, I was just trying to get in the place with my friends.

By definition I believe refuseing to take a military id is against federal law. However beyond that type of id venture a guess to say that any other ids they could refuse in favor of another.

I think that they can refuse to sell to you if they want anyways, so it doesn't matter.

They wouldn't let me in the place. can a public place pick and chose who they let in, with out reason?

EDIT: I am thinking you are right. But being its a place open to the general public, i didn't know if this is a gray area or not.

Mate of mine driving across the US at 25ish had his UK passport with US visa and international and UK drivers licences refused as ID to buy a bottle of tequila. They guy running the store said he didn't know what a UK passport, US visa or international drivers licecences were supposed to look like.

If there not a US equivlent to the plaque that reads "The Mangement Reserves the Right of Admission"?

It is a private establishment, no? It is not a federally funded bar, I presume, so they have the limited ability to choose who may or may not be let in.

Just get sauced someplace else.
I don't believe they can pick and choose which forms of legal i.d. they can accept, however being that they (the bar/bartender/doorman) reserve the right to refuse service to anyone at anytime..well maybe they just don't like how you parted your hair. It is a losing battle just go someplace else.

You can refuse any form of ID you want, at least in my state.

Example, once I carded a guy who I KNEW was under 21 because he went to HS one year above me. He had an out of state drivers license that stated he was like 28 though. So I just refused him anyways. Employees at such establishments always should (if they're not idiots) err on the side of caution, because you can get in a large amount of trouble if someone goes and gets killed in a car wreck after drinking the alcohol you served them.

Thats what my guess was, i was just asking being the law says you can only take these 4 ID's, does it also mean you have to take any one of those ID's

Or could you post a sign in front of a Bar or movie theater saying "We only take military ID as valid ID.

I think you probably could, but of course it would never happen in practice.

^ because you would scare away customers.

I've been to an awful lot of bars these past several months, and they vary an awful lot on what kinds of IDs they take. The nicer, more upscale blues-jazz bars are really uptight about this sort of thing...one of them made me bring in two different forms of picture ID before I could perform (Drivers Licence, and BuckID). Many don't care at all.

I'm sure that they're allowed some variance...but if a bar decides that they dont want to take drivers licences, they arent going to make any money

I think that they're allowed to refuse most ID. I don't know about passports, birth certificates or driving licenses.
In the US I've been turned down when trying to use my driving license, even though it's from a government department. But apparently people with driving licenses from other states get refused too.
It was amusing when a place gave us dirty looks for offering a Bangladeshi and UK passport. I don't think that they were accustomed to anyone from more than 50 miles away visiting.

Ok, I just wasn't sure if it was legal of them to demand one type of government over other valid government ID's. But I am sure you're right.

Thanks for everyones input.

This implies that you were carding people while yourself only 19 or 20; is this common? Seems to be a system open to potential abuse as you will have a lot of friends that age.

In some states is it legal to serve alcoholic beverages in a resturant (as a waiter, I mean) at the age of 18, this is probably the case, seeing as I've done the exact same thing.

A Dutch alternative really happened.
On his passport-photo a guy insisted that he was dressed up and made up as a clown. In the end he got it.
A couple of weeks later it was revoked when it got in the news.
