Im getting the "missing MSVCR71.dll" error as a lot of people seem to be, but even after getting the .dll, and putting it in system32 and sysWOW64 folders, im still getting the error. This is a brand new fresh install of 7 and uninstalling/reinstalling the game doesnt help.Ive tried running it in Compatability mode, Ive updated my Directx and everything, but its not working at all.
I even tried running regsvr32 but apparently I dont have that either, running 64 bit Windows 7
Is there ANY way to get this game to work on Windows 7 64?

Budda, I got it to run on Windows 7 64 bit. I upgraded my laptop to W7 64 from Vista 32 bit. Why Best Buy (where I bought the laptop) decided to put a 32 bit OS on a 64 bit processor, I don't know. Anyway, my big issue was when I went to disk two to continue the installation of BTS I would get "catastrophic error" and the install would die. Apparently when the install asks for disk two the path is set to D: (my cd rom drive) when I changed that to look in D:\ it installed fine. Apparently the install does not like any path without the backslash.

Civ 4 was one of my first installs on my Win 7 Pro 64 box built from scratch. Installed Civ4, activated it, then installed each add-on and activated them. So yes, it works. I'm wondering about all these MSVCRT71.DLL errors. If a bogus version of the DLL is loaded in Vista or Windows, it doesn't go into the system folder or in program files. It goes in a "Virtual Store". Go to your C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Local\VirtualStore folder and look for any versions of MSVCRT71.DLL there and delete them. Then login as admin and copy the MSVCRT71.DLL from System32 to the actual Program Files\Firaxis... etc. folder. You may have to change your folder options to display hidden and system folders to see the AppData folder.

I had the problem and this is how I resolved it....

Search your whole computer for the file MSVCR71.dll hopefully you'll find several copies of it in other programs and games.

Find the most recent version (date changed). Copy it from the source (don't cut it obviously) and paste in to the main firaxis\civ 4 folder.

Budda bing, it should now work.

A friend of mine just got Civ 4 through D2D and is running Windows 7 64. She had some problems getting it to work, too, but it's working now. I'm told that she had to put MSVCR71.dll into Windows/system instead of the /system32 as she'd been advised.

Try putting it into the Windows/system instead?

Did you install it with admin rights?
Do both not work?
Did you patch the game to date?
Did you install the patches with admin rights?

This is my problem. I can get Civ4 to run on win7 64 computer, but I cant update it. It will download the update, but it ont install it. When I manually try to run the installation program it says it cant install on a 64-bit system. When I go to the site to download the patches I get some messaage stating there is "No MSQL connection" so that wont download. Any suggestions?

I am having this problem, I've tired a few of the suggestions on this site and others, and I still can't get it running: Windows 7 64bit professional.

It's a new computer, I've been moving my games over to it from the old one. Originally purchased Civ4 and BTS from Direct2Drive, so I redownloaded the installers and ran them. They run fine, but when I try and run Civ4 I get this error.

I searched my computer for this file and found a few copies of it, copied the newest one to the Civ4 directory and also to the Windows\system32 directory, but so far no luck. Still get the error every time I try and launch Civ.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Edit: According to the README installed it claims to be version 174 which is the latest patch version so I don't think there are any patches for me to apply, WRT the most recent comment.

So problem solved: I wasn't reading carefully. Turns out there were MULTIPLE missing files, similarly named, but a little different. I hadn't noticed the difference at first in the error message I was getting.

Searching for the files elsewhere on my harddrive and copying them into the Civ4 directory did solve the problem once I'd copied them all over.

That text color...my eyes...augh.

Though anything related to msvcrt likely means you need to go find the visual C++ runtime library on the microsoft page.

Xiao Xiong - people can not read your post due to the weird ass colour you wrote it in.

I can play absolutely fine on Win 7 64 bit - It definitely works

I've got Vanilla Civ IV and Civ IV: Complete (via Steam.) Both work fine under W7 x64.

Best I can say is recommend what's already been said - be sure to run _everything_ as administrator. Installer, updater, running the game - all of it!
