Can You Go Back To Previous Civ Titles?

There are some old games that I like to get back to every now and then, and also some game series where I play other iterations than the last one. Examples that fulfill both roles are Pharaoh and the original Stronghold, and Age of Empires II before it got its definitive edition (I don't think it counts as old anymore now). But civ is neither. I may start a game of each civ 2/3/4 every two or three years, but I usually leave after 100 turns again and don't come back. I stopped playing VI wit GS's release, and I don't see me getting back to it anytime again - I played two games when VII was announced, and all I got was a mixture of boredom and annoyance.

In reality, no. I think I've played one or two games of IV since V came out, and definitely no games of V since VI came out, and apart from a couple of games when VII was announced, I stopped playing VI years ago. I should say, though, that unlike many here, I don't think I have ever logged >1000 hours on a Civ game.

I did play some Civ 5 late last year, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. But I think I'm done with it now. As for Civ 4, despite my absolute love for the game, every time I start a game, I can't finish. And while I loved Civ 6, I'm not sure I can go back to it after Civ 7. I still don't plan on uninstalling right away, however. But I have a feeling my Civ 6 days are over.

I liked Civ5 a lot, far more than 6 and have more hours in 5 for less years than 6. However i couldn't go back to 5 after i started playing 6, i tried but didn't manage to play more than 50-100 turns in. I suspect i just had too many hours in 5 at that point but still i never managed to go back to what had been my favorite title in the series (i know i'm a bit of an exception here but i really liked 5).
So i don't see myself going back to 6 after 7 have been released. A lot of what i've seen make me think 7 will be more my kind of game than 6 (it's closer to 5 in several aspects) so unless it's a total failure and i might just forget about civilization until Civ8 is announced, Civ7 will get most of my single player (and probably all strategy) gaming hours

I played Civ6, Civ5 and Beyond Earth in the last several months. I could try Civ3, Civ4 or Alpha Centauri somewhere in the future, but returning to earlier titles doesn't make any sense to me.

After the new version comes out, it's really hard to go back. Even when you find a release disappointing, like I did with 5, there was just too much new stuff for me to really ever want to go back to play in 4. Which was disappointing, since I really never got into 5 (I mean, I still had like 700 hours in it by the end, but I abandoned it even before 6 was released). VI I did enjoy (2600 hours), so definitely no need to go back to 5 or the earlier ones. I expect once 7 comes out, it will be hard to go back to 6.

The only exception is going back for almost more nostalgia's sake. Like I'm sure a few times in the past 10-20 years I've kicked up Alpha Centauri to get in a few games, just to remember the mood of building a Network Node, or listening to whether God does or does not play dice. A year or two ago I also got back into Colonization (the civ 4 off-shoot version), including doing a little self-modding balance of some of the bits.

I find it very easy because they all play distinctly, with distinct pros and cons. They're not strict upgrades like you might expect from another series
Amen!

I still occasionally play 3 and 4 because my laptop can run then.

I've went back to 5 once since the release of 6 and quickly went back. I hate the yield bottlenecks in 5, and I'm happy Civ6 allowed for faster starts.

I rarely go back to any game's previous version. That said, I do enjoy Civ 6 on both PC and Switch (handheld when travelling). So depending on if/how Civ 7 runs on the switch, I can see myself playing Civ 7 on PC and Civ 6 on Switch, at least initially.

I can't, I played the absoloute hell out of 2 and 4, especially 2 as I had more free time.

When I booted up 4 a few years ago, it felt dated.

My wife and I are sticking with Civ V Vox Populi to play hotseat. We both will have individual games for VII, but we won't be able to both play VII until they add hotseat, we're hoping with one of the March updates. Even then, we will keep both games installed since they are both going to be radically different.

One change will be though, I won't be updating Vox Populi anymore. The 4.16.2 version is stable and I'm acting as though this is the final "gold" version.

i first got Civ5 but didnt get into it. Civ6 i then played for over 1000hrs and i recently did 1 playthough of each game from Civ to Civ5. I can't go back, too much is missing that Civ6 has :)

since it was mentioned above, I can go back to games like SMAC (alpha centauri). Since it's not that similar to civ games despite some gameplay mechanics similar to civ2. It was and is very innovative. That said, that game still has problems. The AI's can be quite hostile, and peacing out is quite difficult unless you conquer most of their empire. The game almost forces you to become a raging warmonger. Although you could say newer iterations of civ are almost too peaceful in comparison. At least SMAC keeps you on your toes.

I opined that Civ 7 may be the greatest of all previous Civilization series, based on the gameplay we have seen.
This is true for me since this iteration of the game seems to have a way of allowing the player to see cultures and peoples evolve in ways that actual history seems to have them doing over time. In history we see layers of culture and tradition and language and customs washing over one another as centuries pass.In a sense the Civ 7 game leader figures are just there to give the game player a sense of involvement and identity, a way to role-play without actually being locked in to any one particular culture or people. The three ages also seem an elegant way to permit transitions in time and progress that don't get bogged down in detail as much as they offer players a new way of looking at their situation and the tools they now have available to cope the challenges that confront them in that new era.

I've just finished a session of Civ5 and few days back I played Civ IV A New Dawn so yes, I absolutely can imagine going back and I will, since I have almost no desire to play Civ7. Civ IV with mods is the pinnacle of Civ experience. Civ 5 became good after some time, but there's almost no good mods for it compared to Civ IV. Civ6 is even worse than Civ5 in that regard.

I will most likely keep playing CIV 6 and 5 here and there but most of my time will be spent with 7 going forward

I still play 2, 4 and 5 (just can't get into 3). Mods is what keeps these games entertaining for me.

I love playing TRON (The Rape of Nations) scenario on civ2...I think I downloaded it from civfanatics back in 2001! I second that the WW2 scenario that came with the game is fun. There is just something enduring about a game you can mod with Microsoft paint and notepad :)

Civ4 mods A New Dawn and History Rewritten still make for an epic game. The shear number of units, tech, buildings, wonders, civics and game mechanics they bring still immerses me in the civ experience to this day.

I have 1600 hours on CiV and I'm sure 80% of that time was played on Play Europe map with an extensive list of mods. I enjoy adding modded medieval civilizations to the map.

I like Civ6 (especially building dams, bridges, canals...just altering the map) but the city spamming and micromanagement that comes with it means I don't finish a lot of games.
