Why do you care?
of another faith in preparation for Freedom of Religion?

(if this needs to be moved, the mod should PM me, just to notify me that it's been done).

I haven't seen anything that says you can... it seems unlikely to me. All you need is one town of that religion anyway to build the appropriate building so you can create your own missionaries. However it seems to me that freedom of religion is a civic you would only choose after it appears your nation's religions are becoming too diverse, unless of course you want to use that civic for other non-gameplay reasons.

Of course it could confer other benefits that we don't know about yet...

Since they seem to like historical accuracy, I would imagine that Freedom of Religion would confer a benefit to peaceful builder players (like myself); and it follows that any benefit from freedom of religion would be linked to production or trade (after all, freedoms make people happier=work harder, and if you have multiple religions, you can trade with everyone without too much trouble)

Why would you want a foregn religion in your empire? All that will cause is unhappiness and rioting.

@henry _k_c Do you know? With a historical point of view, it should (under a tolerant-civic, such as freedom of religion (and pacfism?)) give a slight economical, cultural or scientific bonus. In addition to the fact that the civic will already nullify the more cruel effects of foreign religions (probably).

That would be really nice to have, but I don't see it having much meaning without immigration/emigration.

This would seem pretty cool.

OT, if CIV1 was ReligionA, and a city was ReligionB, and that city built asettler, and the settler founded a city, what religion would the city be?

Lockesdonkey,
Actually, I would suspect that, absent a sophisticated immigration model, it's warmongers who will benefit most from freedom of religion since they're the ones who end up with relgiously diverse empires. A small, peaceful builder civ will prbably be full of happy, hardworking, homogenous drones who have no need for freedom of religion, since they all practice the state religion anyway. This may or may not parallel actual history, as expansionist empires are the ones that are often forced to deal with other cultures and religions. I suppose you could also make missionaries serve as a conduit for trade and technology transfer, in which case even peaceful builders might want to welcome them.

Actually I'd say the New City could be No religion, and will then proceed to adopt one (influenced by the religion of its Civ and nearby Cities that is in contact with)

Well, making a state religion gives you +1 happy person per city with that religion. What if freedom of religion gave you +1 happy person per religion in the city?

Probably a little too powerful. Other possibility is +1 happiness for any city with a religion.

Pacifism probably works like Democracy - people get unhappy if their units are far from home.

Not sure about Organized Religion or Theocracy. Theocracy probably increases conversion chances.

Those people came from somewhere, though. They didn't spontaneously appear out of nothing.

Or +1 happiness for citizens sharing that religion and -1 for citizens of a different religion. Freedom of religion cancels out both.
