Cannot display this video mode

whenever I try to start civ3 it tells me cannot display this video mode.
I think I know what the problem is. I just dont know how to fix it.
I had a similar problem with another game. default setting were 800x600x32 100Mhz. This particular game allowed me to change it to 75mhz and it worked just fine. Is there a way I can do this with civ3?

First, remember that this game has to be at least 1024x768.

Then check this post for changes you can make to the .ini file, to tweak settings.

Thanks. I actually have allready tried that. editing the ini file didnt seem to do anything. The monitor can display 1024x768 .
I should have probably mentioned this before but this is the vanilla version of civ 3.

I have the latest drivers that I can find for my video card. I have windows xp.
