Thought I would start a new thread for this 'new' unit..
I feel I am improving slowly, but I figure it takes time. :)

http://www.maritimequest.com/warship_directory/great_britain/pages/battleships/hms_canopus.htm

The render below does not contain the turrets as I have to add them after, and she probably doesn't look perfect as I had no top view to use.

I think it was around 1050 faces (Not sure if those are the same as polys, but I think it is) without the turrets. It uses the battleships animations also.

Tell me what you think. :mischief: '

I think (Just musing over it now) is that they often repainted ships in wartime, camoflauge you know. Especially in WWI without radar, airplanes, but especially for subs and to make it hard for those long range guns to find you..

I skinned it using a 1899 pic as a reference. I mean a coloured drawing of it in 1899, :P
There is a few details I missed, as I only had the side view at the time (A thing I am learning to not do in the future.)

Well, it might've been repainted, but they did a lot more than that... the rigging is totally different for one thing (I guess they'd given up on the idea that the ship would ever use its sails again). Honestly, if it didn't say those two pictures were of the same ship, I'd never have believed it. Of course, if you'd shown me pics of the before and after of the USS Merrimac and CSS Virginia without telling me, I'd never believe they'd been the same ship.

Admirall Matt,

Once more you prove your self to catch pretty quick, and giving us not only awesome and marvellous units regarding design, but also units badly needed.
Once more thank you!!!!:goodjob:

I agree, a very beautiful ship.

I've heard that the white and yellow paintings were used during peace times. And that the grey color was used in war times. I don't know if that's true, but anyway great work.:)

They probably rerigged it when the dreadnought came out so that it would be a little more useful for it's new purposes.

It was originaly built for use in the Pacific, as the Japanese navy was getting powerful. But in WWI all of the class served in the Mediterranean, and most likely not in it's original role, that of the main battleship.

Doubt it is sorely needed, but I will enjoy using it. ;)

Nice one !

Thanks a lot to you! This was the ship that I asked you about, it had all the faces inside out.. Your instructions didn't solve it (Unfortunately) But you did encourage me to keep trying! (I was quite discouraged at that moment_.

Thanks. :) Maybe I should create a new skin and put it on the fx Nif so when it in combat it will change to the grey pattern. :P

To further the though about them being different paint schenes, I am reading a book about Canadian ships in WWII.

The first chapter starts like this.

August 31, 1939, was a holiday in the port of Vancouver. Two Ships of the Canadian Navy, the Destroyers Fraser and Saint Laurent, lay in the harbour playing there part in the celebrations. They were like all destroyers, swift and beautiful greyhounds of the sea. They were nearly 200 feet long with, with dazzling white-painted sides curving gracefully above the water....

Early in the afternoon, however, came a sudden change. Quite orders passed along the deck... ...Fraser and Saint Laurent arrived in Halifax on September 15, grey ships now streaked with camouflage..

So even though it was WWII it did happen..

Could you please upload a button for this ship?

I will try to get it for you. Any others you want while I am at it?

Hmmm... well all your work! Hehe...

You did post those two excellent ironclad buttons... how about a button for your medieval war galley too?!?!

It would be nice (in the future) if you include a button file with whatever units you offer for download.

Thanks again for your work... I just inserted your Canopus into the game (but yeah, would like a button for it). I think I'm going to try your medieval war galley next.

Hmm, you seem to be picking toe worst of the lot. :P

But I will male those for you as I didn't insert them into my mod as is was a bit too crowded.

I don't think I'm picking the "worst of the lot", so much as I'm picking "the most glaring holes".

Trireme to Frigate is a pretty big hole IMHO.

Almost as unforgiveable is the gap between Ironclad Gunboat (not even ocean going), to WWII Battleship.

I'm using your vessels in a Ironclad Cruiser, Ironclad Battleship and Pre-Dreadnought line to fill some gaps, and somebody else already made an excellent Dreadnought unit, so that bridges the gap nicely between Ironclad Gunboat and WWII Battleship.

Most of your other work (which I assume you must like better) is either War Junks or WWII and beyond vessels... I'm mostly looking to fill gaps in the timeline, not so much to increase in areas already covered.

I saw the excellent Galleas by someone else, but it seems to be missing an animation file (drat).

Say Matt... if you don't like the work you did on those units, is there any chance you'll revisist those ships and snazzy them up a bit? The late 1800s ocean-going ironclads is a HUGE hole in the naval progression list and really needs to be covered... I hate the fact you jump from Ironclad Gunboat to WWII battleship!

Love your work Matt... I'm more appreciative that someone is actually working on ships never covered before rather then adding 12-differant variations of modern battleships and what-not.

P.S.
Is there a "max-limit" to the number of units you can add to Civ4 BtS?

P.P.S.
Almost forgot... I'm using your Paddle Steamer too (nice bridge between Galleon and Transport)! How about a button for it?!?!

Yep, I am thinking of revisiting these units soon, I just have a few other request first.

And no, no max limit, it is Civ 4 after all. ;)

Here are the two buttons along with the first tow. Though I read the paddlewheeler too late, sorry. I will get you it tomorrow hopefully.

Don't know if you saw in the other post... but I know how to make my own BUTTONS now, so I already made one for the Paddle Steamer.

Thanks again for the great model. I hated switching directly from Galleon to Transport... seemed really stupid to me.

I also figured-out how to "round out" the corners on the Buttons... the buttons you made were "more square" for a lack of a better word, then the default Civ buttons.

Once again, I do appreciate these great units Matt, I just put the Highlander unit in the game (with a new button I made!)... EXCELLENT UNIT... keep 'em coming!

Cool, I will have to get you to send all the buttons you make. :P

I am glad you like the units..

No problem Matt... Wolfshanze at cox dot net if you want to e-mail me directly, I can send you all those buttons I'm making.

I will try to get around to that soon.
Unless you would just upload them in my creation thread for everyone. ;)
