Can't build Renaissance walls, tech is researched

I have researched Siege Tactics, my city has Medieval Walls in it, and still, I can't build Renaissance Walls. I have reached the industrial era though, does that make the walls obsolete? If so it would be a weird design choice as the next tech in line from Siege Tactics is in the industrial era. I've also checked if the walls need repairs, which they don't. And the city has never been attacked. And I have been able to build Renaissance Walls in other games. Currently playing Greece as Gorgo on Huge, Epic, and the difficulty above King, I don't remember which comes first of Immortal or Emperor, probably Emperor since that is above a King, but below someone Immortal?

At some point building walls isn't necessary and cities just have city defense. I don't think it's a bug but it's another oddity that occurs due to pacing (the fact that you have a short window where you might build those walls).

I pretty much never build anything beyond the first walls since they're pretty powerful (for single player) anyways. Maybe once in a great while if the AIs are being even more wildly aggressive than normal over a particular city.

Yeah, well, it is kinda weird if the walls get obsolete by the very next technology in the queue though :/

You have probably unlocked the Civil Engineering civic, which automatically gives every city 200 fortification and the ability to bombard. That civic also obsoletes existing walls and prevents you from building new walls (or repairing old walls).

How does this work with that ability with housing if you have medieval walls? What was it..Monarchy I think?

Is there any warning that civ vi gives if a building/walls/unit becomes obsolete ?

I didn't see these warnings in my games. How to know if an AI city has 90 of defense or still walls standard defense? Thx

If you mouse hover the bars above the city banner for a city with fortifications, it will tell you Garrison health and, if the city has any fortifications, Fortification health. For a city with fortifications that has not been attacked, Garrison health will be 200/200, while Fortification health may be 50/50 (city just has Ancient Walls), 100/100 (Medieval Walls), 150/150 (Renaissance Walls) or 200/200 (post-Civil Engineering fortifications). You can find this information by mouse hovering your own cities or any city of another civ.

I'm not aware of any notification from finishing Civil Engineering, other than the regular notice that you finished that civic (and inviting you to pick new policies) and each of your cities suddenly having fortification bonus and the ability to bombard.

I don't know. I've never built Medieval Walls even when I had the Monarchy form of government (which perhaps shows how little I think of an investment in Medieval Walls, but that may just be me).

Walls have maintenance cost, though. Does Civil Engineering give maintenance-free fortifications, or does it add the appropriate maintenance costs?

Yeah walls are pretty out of wack.
I never build better than ancient. And when you get ren walls you are just one tech away from free walls everywhere... You don't even have time to build them even if you wanted to.
Should either make other walls cheaper and Ren walls appear earlier (or just scrap them) or remove the free walls altogether and add "modern defences" building.

EDIT: also does it bother anyone that siege towers and battering rams work in modern era?

The maintenance cost of pre-existing walls appears to remain even after you research Civil Engineering.
