I read in a previous thread that it was at the bottom of the domestic advisro screen but i can't find it!

You need to select which cities you want to form a new civ/colony and then the button will appear.

By the way, it's a pity you can't select what civ it will become. It would have been nice to have somewhat similar civs be created from your empire. Like the Americans being created from Western European powers like France or England and Koreans from Japan or China, for instance. But I got Persians from the Dutch, Zulus from the Byzantines and Aztecs from the HRE. It would be great if they were at least from the same cultural group.

Ths button should appear either way without selecting any cities. I believe you need to have only 2 cities on a different continent. You open up the domestic advisor screen and on the buttom right, you will see a raised fist button

Yeah I totally agree Tavenier. My Dutch colony ended up being America. It would have been cool if it would have been a bit more realistic. Ah well, Im sure it will be modded in soon enough!

Well, the Dutch getting a colony like America isn't that weird. New York was founded by the Dutch and Holland and England are quite similar countries (culture, geography eg). The Dutch getting Mongolia, Arabia or Carthage as a colony would be way stranger!
:-)

Too bad they can't adopt a procedural approach and actually create new civilizations from scratch, perhaps with generic leaderheads. That would be much better and more realistic.

You're right, not that weird I guess. But, It would definitely be cool if you could pick your Civ and Civ Leader or as Disrupt suggessted just get something from scratch. Ah well, not complaining that much...It's still a really neat feature!!! I mean its a sure-fire way to get a die-hard ally!

I can imagine a big exploit if you could choose what civ you get as a colony: just choose one with a strong and up to date UU ( example: redcoats or cossacks ) and make your colony go to war for you. I think that would be easy to go Conquest or dom like that...

Speaking of conquest, I found out you can take a chunk out of another civ, and grant those cities as a new civ, even while you're still at war with the guys you got those cities from. But note that ONE of those cites that got independence was from another civ that had that city taken by the guy that i fought for new cities... So i'm not sure if it'll work with cities form one civ via conquest. If that's confusing i can try n clear it up

But it is on the same continent you are on?

But I get no button!

Are there any pre-requisites I need to know about - and which the game isn't telling me?

Do I, for instance, need the to-be colony cities to reach a certain minimum size? Or do I need Astronomy to create an overseas colony? (Playing as Portuguese)

Please help, the colony cost is killing my game.

(I have pressed F1, and then shiftselected my six overseas cities. Cannot see any raised fist button appearing for the life of me. Where exactly on the Domestic screen should it appear?)

I only see the 'EXIT' text in my bottom right - could you tell me exactly where, relative to the exit button, this raised fist appears?

And if there are any circumstances where the button doesn't appear? (Do you need to run certain civics? Have researched certain techs? Or what?)

You can't spawn a colony if you're playing with the maximum number of players (18). Killing players off doesn't help either.

You need to have *2* cities on a different continent/island(both of them need to be on the same) than your own before the button will appear.

Once you have made 2 cities on the same continent and created your colony you can then gift the colony cities that are elsewhere just like you would gift cities to any other civ.

And yea, as Lt. Bob stated you cant make a colony if you started with 18 civs(even if you already killed some of them).

thanks for the info. I was about to thrash my computer for refusing me my colonies.

Thanks! This must be it!

In my game, I got the quest asking you to settle seven continents (including the starting one) - so naturally each of my six overseas cities were on a separate "continent" (mostly 1 plot islands).

The inability to do this quest and immediately thereafter pawn off the cities as a colony civ really makes it not worth bothering with this quest. (While getting a Great Prophet did save me this time, because I could finally build the holy city of my religion and so offset the huge cost of the almost-colonial cities; that's only because I had missed the change to Great Wall making it spawn something else instead of the Great Engineer I had relied on to get an "instant second wonder" contributing to a Great Prophet)

I know what you mean. I wish the civilopedia mentioned that little tidbit.

On a connected note, I just uploaded a mod that increases the player limit to 40 eliminating this little annoyance and allowing you to play with all 34 civilizations at the same time. I altered the code to allow the colonies to be civs that already exist, just not leaders. It's currently in the moderator queue for downloads

I killed off a player using World Builder, and I was given the option to colonise cities, but when I clicked on them nothing happened.

As England you can colonise Ireland - I'm small enough as it is!
