I just put in the disc and it installed a program called STEAM. Well when I click Steam is says "cannot connect to the steam network, try again later" and then quits...

Why do I have to connect to steam? I bought a disc, why can't I just install the game??

Anyone know how to fix this?

Sadly Civ5 is a Steamworks game, and it does not matter if you like MP or want to play it at all, Steam is in and Civ5 will not work without Steam and you will need a Steam account for it.

Steam does not require an internet connection all the time, it only needs a connection during the installation, afterwards you can set it to offline mode, but patches will require that you go online again.
Also Steam does not have any restrictions on which machine or how often you can install the game.

Before you say anything: I hate steam and do not approve it.

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, STEAM, quite possibly the worst thing ever, won't let me log in. Says my account doesn't exist even though I can log in from a browser. What a joke.

I figured it out, apparently creating the account from the web site is different from creating it through the application. I created the same account through the Steam application and was able to get it working. I found it quite strange that you have to download the install files even if I have the DVD.
Unfortunately now when I run the game, I choose Direct X 10-11, and the video plays, but after the screen is black with music playing but no game. Has anyone seen this before? I find it strange that the video work fine but not the game, I remember older Civs on my old PC was the opposite. When I try running with Direct X 9, it just crashes a few seconds into the video.
My specs are: AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-72 2.1 GHz, 3 GB RAM, Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP 2, ATI Radeon HD 3200.
Probably not quite recommended, but certainly better than the minimum requirements. Any help is greatly appreciated!
