Well... i have never been able to play civilization 4 on this computer but when i installed it onto a friends laptop it ran fine, slightly slow because it wasn't the greatest. However now i have REALLY improved this computer and given it basically all new everything.

Computer Specifications:
(Is amazingly fast plays all my other games (Sims 2, Rome Total War, Combat Flight Sim 3, Flight Sim 4, Age of Empires 3--all my games)
2.4GHz Intel Core Duo 2 E6600
Nvidia 7900GT
Intel ATX motherboard---> 975XBX2
2GB Cosair RAM (2x1GB)
250GB Hard Disk (IDE) used like nothing...
an old combo drive that was in my pre updated computer-- Samsung SM-304B Combo Drive 4x/4x/24x CD-RW and 4x DVD-ROM drive
Windows XP Home - Service Pack 2

I have run several things from the internet to see if things work and everything was well above recommended apart from the DVD drive where it said it couldn't find the speed.

After all that the problem is that I can install everything from civilization but when i try and play it this happens.
1) Put disk in drive
2) Auto Play loads Civ 4 to the PLAY, READ ME, EXIT
3) Click PLAY
4) nothing happens
5) Windows Error thingy pops up with debug-send error report-don't send
6) Click send
7) does everything it ticks off and i click More Information
8) directs me to microsofts page for support where it says it doesn't know whats wrong and directs me to an update of the civ 4 version (i have version 1.0 originally yet downloaded to the 1.61 version-still doesn't run does the same)
9) Repeat everything yet this time select Debug
10) Nothing at all happens
11) The End. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!

The only thing i can think is the old combo drive. its an IDE and due to my new motherboard i only have space for 2 IDE devices which are my hard disk and combo drive, but have space for ultra sata and sata 2 etc etc everything else. Seriously i know not what to do. please help me. The game has worked on every other computer that i have installed it on to check if it was the disk tho it isn't. THANK YOU. Mike.

Have you got the latest drivers for motherboard and video card? Have you upgraded all the parts, but just transferred the hard-disk over (ie - instead of reinstalling windows etc?) Have you been to WindowsUpdate and downloaded all the latest updates?

If you just transferred over the hard-drive, I suggest that you uninstall Civ, reinstall it, then patch it to v1.61.

If you did put a new Hard disk in, then make sure all latest drivers and windows updates are installed. If you could give details of the error message, that may help.

It is quite possible that the copy protection for the game doesn't like the CD ROM if you transferred the hard-drive over. But a reinstall may fix that.

thank you.
Well the hard disk is new and i have reinstalled it three times and the error has occured each time. However where would i get all these updates for my motherboard, video card etc from? secondly i have downloaded a trial version of "Registry Booster" and found nothing to do with hardware that was wrong. All my other games work and they have all had to be reinstalled from their disks. And i have installed windows xp onto the hard drive from scratch, however i did get somebody who new more about it than me to do it to keep all my files safe. I have updated my computer for about a month now and only had problems with CIV4. I think that everything is up to date aswell.

ok. I have gone onto the microsoft website and found a handy little thing which finds out if i have any updates that i can install. It has highlighted "Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)" and "
Office 2003 Service Pack 2". I will update these soon. However will these make any difference and can you guide me where to find updates for my Motherboard and Video card. because i have been on the Nvidia website and searched for "Download Drivers" and tried to find the 7900GT but can not. Only the 8 series and GeForce Go 7 Series, none of which are what i'm looking for.

Thanks mate... i will try this when i get home.

ok i updated my driver for my graphics card to the latest driver. I will not however touch my motherboard. Can you suggest another reason why it does STILL NOT WORK....before I cry....

Thanks

Can you try to run Civ4, then access your syslog file? It should be on C:\ (or whatever your 250Gb IDE drive letter is).
You will have to check some of the folder options, under Tools in Windows Explorer (particularly "Display Hidden Folders" and "Display Contents of System Folders"). This might help. Unless Windows doesn't have the Syslog file like Linux does. :(

i have looked for the syslog file on the local C:\ Drive with the search or all folders and files and found nothing

Okay, sorry. I'm not used to debugging Windows problems.

It is, however, most likely your DVD Drive (If, in fact, it IS a hardware problem) or one of your parts is a lemon. Do other graphic-demanding games work perfectly fine?

(I've had Firaxis issues before. I bought Railroads, but couldn't play it. I had a Sempron, when I needed an Athalon processor. I sold the game to my friend at a loss.)

i have no other lemon parts. check out my computer spec at the top. all my other games work but there not like doom 3 or whatever. all i have is what i said about in my first post.

ok how many civ 4 disks should i have for version 1.0 that i bought almost as soon as it came out. Because i have only one and people are reffering to a disc 2???

ok ignore last post. i have the DVD-ROM version that means I have only one disc.

ok i have updated what was said at first the post. I have done all the possible Microsoft Updates, and updated to the latest Video Card Driver. Yet I still have the problem. I will not be touching my motherboard with a barge pole however. ME NO UPDATEY MOTHERBOARD. I have also updated the game to version 1.61.

The only few things remaining would be that i have no soundcard but an intergrated one. A 4xspeed DVD-ROM player. However could it also be something to do with the actual DVD?

FOR GODS SAKE WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO MAKE THIS WORK!!!!!!!! AHHHH

a wat text?
where do i get that from???

Start -> Run... -> type "dxdiag" and click OK

Run all the tests there and then save all information as a .txt file

Checked everything no problems only that I don't have a microphone. Check attachment.

While checking my device manager I came across two entries for my processor. As this is a Core Duo 2 E6600 I thought that it could have been the fact that it could be like two processors. Am i correct or do I have two drivers for it? Secondly i checked my "System Devices" in Device Manager and under "Motherboard Resources" there were two of the same entries again and there were no drivers for them? Is THIS correct or bad? Thanks...
