The option to play in DX10/11 mode is greyed out for me. It says "requires update". There is no Civ 5 update, there are no windows updates available (Vista x64 SP2). I've uninstalled the game and reinstalled, i have updated drivers, but it keeps telling me "requires update".

Any ideas?

I too am having the same issue. Vista SP2, Ati Radeon HD4890 1gb version (DX10.1 card) and can't launch it no matter what I try.

here's my post from the 2K forums:

I'm running Vista x64 with SP2, i have DX11 (and 10 and 9). However, like in this image (http://i.imgur.com/OJkl8.jpg) my option to play in DX10 is unavailable, it says "requires update" (http://imgur.com/YZAz3.jpg). However, there are no updates to Civ 5 in steam, nor do i have any available Windows updates. All my drivers are up to date. I've also completely removed and reinstalled the game.

I'm trying to get AA to work, which is greyed out in DX9 version, i can't even force it to work in DX9 with nHancer. I wanted to try DX10, but as i said above, i've run into this problem.

Your issue is the same as mine, down to the point of the launcher looking wonky.

It better not come down to 2k\Firaxis saying they wont support DX10 on Vista, because that's just ridiculous. Even DX11 runs fine on Vista -- it's not a W7 exclusive.

Same exact problem here. Vista 64, SP2 is installed. DX11 ATI 5770 1gb graphics card with latest drivers (Cat 10.9).

On that screen that is wonky, you can right click the dx11 option and create a shortcut. When I run that shortcut, it says d3d11.dll is missing.

Exactly the same as you, except that I'm running W7...

Sorry I didn't get a chance to test yet. I will definitely report when I have had the chance, I've just been busy with other obligations. :)

I dunno WTH made it start working, but even though windows update said it had no updates, it popped up saying it needed to reboot, so i did, and now it works. I really dunno what's made it work. Try updating anything in windows update and restarting if you can.

As a side note, it's still unbearably choppy in DX10/11 and i have a gaming/workstation rig built for 3D rendering and Animation (as well as super gaming). And while DX10/11 has un-greyed the AA options in the menu, i still can't get AA to work at all, i've tried forcing it with god knows how many programs, and tried binary AA compatibility strings, to no avail.

Doesn't work. Fully updated Windows Vista SP2. Fully updated DirectX 10.1. Every windows update (optional included) downloaded.

Doesn't let me launch it.

I posted this further down guys. I had the exact same problem, this is the solution:

So after banging my head for a while, I realized that Civ 5 REQUIRES DirectX11 to be installed even if your card supports DirectX10 only. The only way you will get DirectX10 support is to install Directx11.

For Vista users:
1. Make sure you have SP2.
2. Once you have Service Pack 2 look at optional updates and download Windows Platform Update (this has DirectX11).
3. Restart computer.
4. Use Steam or DIY and update your video drivers to the latest version.
4. On restart run the demo again and it should now give you the choice to run in DirectX 10 and 11. (Anti-Aliasing will now be selectable in game).

I really hope this helps some people.

Something else to try is find and run DXSetup.exe in the Civilization 5/DirectX folder. I have the steam version, but I am assuming it's in the same place for a normal install. Run as administrator if you're on Vista. Doing this got the DX10/11 option to run, but it still crashes for me, so I'm using DX9 until a fix is found.
