Can't use my iron?

I have a source of iron with a mine improvement. I've built two units (legion and ballista) that require iron and now it's telling me I can't build anymore because it requires at least on unit of iron. Am I missing something?

Resources in the game are finite. You can no longer build infinite units that require a resource. If you have a iron node that gives 2 iron, you can only build 2 units that use iron. If those units are destroyed, the iron is freed back up and you can build other things with the iron, but in essence those 2 units have to be supplied by that node.

The same thing goes with uranium, coal, etc..

There is a civilization which doubles yield from strategic resources, so it's meant as a mechanic.

Thanks - I was wondering why there were numbers of resources at the top of the UI screen so it all makes sense now. The in-game help is worse than useless. Tried downloading the manual a couple of times last night without success.

I feel your pain. Due to the lack of any useful documentation I'm still trying to figure out this mechanic.

You don't need to download the manual, it's in the top level where you installed your game (i.e. in Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v). Strategic resources start on page 42.

Strategic resources allow you to build certain units and buildings. When you construct an
improvement on a strategic resource hex, it provides you with a limited number of those
resources, and these are consumed when you construct the associated units or buildings. For
example, you use one iron resource to build each Swordsman unit. If you don’t have any iron
available, you can’t construct the Swordsman. The resource becomes available to you once
more if the unit or building is destroyed.

Dope-slap! Thanks!!

Overall, I'm really enjoying the game so I don't want to join the chorus of people trashing it, but I thought that the help system was much superior in IV. They had lots of hyperlinks to let you jump around. I'm sure many of these wrinkles will get worked out soon enough.

I'm really enjoying the game, too. The main obstacle to playing it is after a while my butt gets stiff. :p

I too am enjoying Civ V but agree that, so far, the manual has been woefully inadequate. My son and I played a cooperative internet game on Sunday and left it after a few turns. When we went to reload the game, I clicked on the "Launch game" button and the game would not complete the load process. Later, we noticed that we had picked up three online players in lieu of the three AI players we had on Sunday. So we exited and tried again. This time, the window said the game was reloading so I did not click on the "Launch game" button. Nothing happened until I clicked on "Launch game". And this time, I watched to make sure no other players had tried to join out game and replace the AI players. I guess the interface does not warn you that you cannot join a game that is reloading.
