Capitolization glitch?

Let me say first how much I appreciate all the help...I know my newbie questions aren't exactly thought provoking or entertaining. I try to find things in the manual/civilopedia first, but they're somewhat lacking on things...and the search feature here doesn't seem to work...

I've managed to research Capitolization and it shows up on the "build menu"...but it is in parenthesis and nothing else is. It shows the completion time like every thing else in the menu, but when I choose it, it is selected, but there's no completion time shown, nor a buy price.

I was building something big for a long time untill I had to change projects...so capitolization showed as taking only one round to complete in the menu. I picked it and left it selected for 20 rounds...and nothing seemed to ever change. And when I unselected it, it gave me the usual "sure you want to lose 50%?" prompt.

Then when I went back to it later, build time was back up to 35 turns or so...like I never did it in the first place.

Any insights would be appreciated...

Capitalization takes your shield production each turn and converts it into gold. It's a good way to build up your treasury if you have nothing to build in that city. You can never "build" a capitalization improvement and any shields you had built up before switching to capitalization are lost. As far as having a "turns to build" I don't think it really means anything, just a programming loose end.

I think that you keep your shields, but if you switch to some other type of production you lose 50% like Qualic said. I don't remember whether Capitalization belongs to some type (improvements or wonders), but that could be checked easily.

IIRC capitalization is classed as a wonder rather than an improvement

You can switch between wonder and capitalization, and if you've built on a wonder, switch to cap, play a turn, and then switch back to the wonder you'll have the same amount of shields as before.

If you switch to an improvement or unit, you'll lose 50% of the shields. If you without exiting the cityscreen switch back, you'll get the shields back automatically, so the switch isn't actually applied until you exit the cityscreen.

I confirm capitalization belongs to the wonders class, because I never lost any shield when I switched from a wonder (when it was completed) to capitalization (when I had no other wonder to build).
And when another wonder was available, I switched back from capitalization to this new wonder, and completed it !

Capitalization is a waste of resources, IMO. Make caravans instead.

My most coomon use of capitalization is just before the end of the game (when I know I amo going to win or have just launched spaceship) - set high production cities to capitalization - then use the gold produced to set the luxury slider as high as possible - bumbs up the score nicely.

IMO, Capitalization was programmed in so that you could "shut off" the production of the city when it contained everything that the city needed. In Civ1, I would have to build military units that I did not need after my spaceship was launched just so I had something to produce. :p

Is Capitalization really a waste in this instance, JJJ? Try making things that you absolutely do not need! That is a waste!
