spain attacked me - usual religious hatred

I countered, wiped out her armies and closed in on her cities

Then...she vassaled to gilgamesh!!! Lots of time fighting, no gains..

It was a long time ago, but i am sure thats what happened.

Yeah, that's right but I've seen it happen with multiple wars more often.

FWIW I read your answer with interest. Not saying I will calculate carefully in future and I will no doubt continue having the unfortunate 'you vassaled to who?' outrage...but I will think of your answer when it happens.
