Playing a Tiny map Deity game as Scythia vs Japan. Been a long tough war as Japan gets +4 combat bonus for Deity and another +10 for Defender of the Faith but at last I managed to capture one of his cities. As soon as I move my unit into the city, the game ends and plays the "game over" video and says "You have been defeated." No idea why capturing his city would cause me to loose but I've attached the game save file if anyone wants to check it out.

This may not be a bug.

I had the same thing happen to me, but then I went back to my last prior save, and noticed that one of my opponents was very close to a religious victory (something I knew hardly anything about). They just need a majority of cities in all civs to be their religion to win. I think that when I went to war with a different power, and captured a couple of their cities, I inadvertently pushed my own civilization above 50% since the cities I captured were religious for the religion leader (they had converted a couple of my cities a bit earlier, and I hadn't yet gotten around to converting them back).

I'd say, go back and check to see if this was a religious victory for someone.

Needless to say, if this is what it was, the game should have explained this, instead of just saying "you lost"...

Yes, you are correct and I have figured out that is indeed what happened since I first posted this. However, the frustrating thing is that the game ends immediately as you capture the city without allowing the option to raze the city. If I were allowed to raze the city, I could press on toward the capital but that's not an option since the game ends immediately.

Yeah, they probably should so something like not count occupied cities.
