Cargo cults?

Pretty sure I've said this before but...

Again, this is just hypocrisy. Some of you seem to think that if you think someone else's belief system is invalid, it's ok to bash it. So long as nobody gets to bash yours.

Seems no sillier to me than some of your beliefs. Get over yourselves. And if you want to piss and moan about someone bashing your beliefs, perhaps you should practice a bit more tolerance for the beliefs of others. Not just the ones you deem valid.

WhoTF are you talking to?

I'm not bashing anyone or anything. I think its a pretty interesting phenomenon.

If you're gonna make accusations, you better state who it is you're accusing.

Take all this pointless religion pro/con stuff elsewhere, believe it or not there are some of us here who would actually like to discuss something w/out it devolving into the same old lame religious arguing.

This is very interesting - it could teach us a lot about the nature of religion, imo.

Think about it - these people are worshipping something they do not understand - much like the early religions that spawned on this planet.

If we had the magical ability to observe the first religions first-hand, I'm sure we'd find them just as wacky as cargo cults. I'm talking 5,000+ years ago.

Wasn't talking to you. But to be honest, if I started a thread wanting to know more about the "bizarre" aspects ofthe cult of Christianity, how well do you think that would go over?

I really don't see what's so interesting about it myself. It mirrors other religions quite well. Their gods apparently are responsible for things they don't understand. Sounds like the basis for every other God I've ever heard of.

Two reason for this post:

A- Bump this thread. Read the content of the link in the first post, it's really interesting.

B- Congratulations to the overzealous religious posters for once again taking a thread about something interesting and turning it in your own little sunday school bs. Bravo!

What a great short story idea. I'm picturing a sci-fi setting, with natives a little more sophisticated than to make mere "coconut radios" . . . .

Is there nothing of value in those islands to exploit? Why hasn't anyone from the outside world chartered a private plane, land there, distribute the goodies they expect and say: "Yes, I'm your Messiah. Now kneel and worship me!"

its weird !

Praise the Cargo !

On cargo-cult programming:
Note that it is defined as an incompetant style.

It's worth mentioning that this can be generalized and that serious programmers don't like "magical" things. They will often use terms like "automagically" as a derogatory way of saying something happens and they don't know why. Things that are "magical" are unreliable and dangerous. They may have side-effects or suddenly disappear or re-surface later. Serious professional programmers are out to destroy all "magic", not worship it.

Just a little aside.

Please stop taking personal offense, especially when he's undeniably right.

The most interesting form of cargo cult that I know of is cargo cult programming, also known as cookbook programming, or voodoo programming (after voodoo economics). It's when you see a program, copy lots of it without a clue, and then just twiddle bits until it works for what you want it to do.

Cargo cult website design is perhaps the most annoying version of this, which fills websites with crap.

Lol, that's exactly how I coded for UT2004. And more than likely how I'll continue to code in the future.

I can't get wiki up in China (it's obviously reactionary imperialist propaganda or something  ), but I believe that the john frum stuff is related to Prince Philip being a God. Apologies if you knew this already but here's a great link:

http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=388901&in_page_id=1770

And here's some quotes by Prince Philip that pretty well prove beyond all doubt that he IS a God;

To further insult Canadians during a royal visit:
"We don't come here for our health. We can think of other ways of enjoying ourselves."

To a driving instructor he met during a stroll in Oban, Scotland:
"How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to get them past the test?"

When talking to some british students in Oriental Asia (think it was China), he joked with them "you shouldn't stay here too long, or you'll turn slitty-eyed"

Whilst on a tour of a factory in northern England, Prince Philip pointed out a fuse box that looked quite old. He said "it looks like it was made by an Indian!"

The man is clearly a God :crazyeye: !

Yup. It originally was accessible here, but then somebody up there realized that basically anybody could put anything up there anytime. And since they can't monitor every page every second, might as well render the whole system inaccessible.

Yeah, I know. Sad and pathetic...
