carrying life's stereotypes to Civ?

i usually hate them all equally, but if the british are in I might go a little out of my way to make them beg for mercy

I always like beating up on the French and the Arabs. The Americans are worthless on Civ 3 though so I don't play as them.

hmm, i don't have any enemies before starting the game. it's always the one right next door. and since i don't put link relations and play as lots of civs, no common enemy in game.
and about stereotypes i don't think i let it go to the game. although i hate mongolia in the game.

I'm an American and I've only played them once. The expansionist trait is a waste...

Who do I like to beat up on? The Zulu and the Germans. That's only because they start near me often and usually are the first ones to declare war on me.

For me there's no correlation between Civworld and the real world...unless you all want me nuking all your hometowns in 1732...didn't think so.

I must say, when I responded to this message 1st time, I didn't say who I will or will not play. This is because I don't see any relation between the real world and civ civ's. This may be due to the fact not many of the civ's are set in this time and age.
I base all my choices on the civ's traits.

I was just pointing out that the civ's are not set in this time, so how you feel about them is silly. I've only played English once, and that was from a random civ start, and i'm English.

Saying all that:

I have no hatred towards the Germans, but I will try and kill them before they have a chance to get Panzers. This is due to fact if they get them they're 2 hard to beat.

Persians, for some reason I will always attack the persians. I think this is as they jsut keep on attacking me with sneak attacks whenever they can, so i've now got into habbit of doing them 1st

I developed a strategy

Its called modding the game (Do it for the French as well)

Make the F-15 have the Bombard of a Bomber, and give the Musketeer 4 attack, and you should be fine

Thanks for the advice Louis, but I like to play vanilla Civ/PTW. (Yeah, I'm one of THEM.) Its a sickness of mine, someday I hope to be rid of it. Until then, I guess I should accept the challenge of playing a civ that has a _terrible_ UU. :D

I just play civs for thier UU and traits but I do end up in war with france a lot but thats beacause there all way so close and thier pink i mean how could i not attack a pink civ.

I generally hate the russians, mongols, and germans. All due to things they did to me in Civ1. Still have the box and manual for it too. I was the Romans in Civ1, then with Civ2 I was mainly the Carthigeans, and now with Civ3 I've been the Romans, Greeks and Carthagieans. And if they put Canada or the Dutch into Conquest I'll be them to cause I'm a first generation Canadian with Dutch parents

Remember those days with vanilla civ3 only, I used to play China, India or Egypt. Mainly because of traits and UU, but also because I in real life really like those countries.

Then I got PTW, and I switched to the Scandinavians! :viking:
I think it was just very fun to play my own civ once again (remember good ol' days with civ2), and their UU isn't bad at all!
:D

i dont hold grudges and the only civ i refuse to play as is england, because in civ, everythign about them sucks. and yes, im english.
i normally play as either chinese or french, despite having a hatred for france in real life, they suit my style of play, os i use them alot. the germans are also fun to play, or kill.

I do not hold grudges against any civs i've even played the french (man the musketeer sucked) I haven't played the americans through partly as a personal protest and partly as they are the worst civ of all. Also i am very angry really that japan is 5 agressive because of one single ten year period before then japan had hardly ever had a war (not exactly an expert on japan but i think i am correct) and also america should be five as they have been at least slightly involved usually more involved in almost every single war in the twentieth centiary the only war i can think of they wern't involved in was the suiz war and that was only to stop england and france making money.

Does anyone carry any stereotypes to the game?
this meaning,
do you play countries because thats your nationality?
Of course :D
do you NOT play countries because you have something against them? (in real life)
Yes.
I don't play the modern civ, nor the civ that had not a long history of being "builders".
It's an immersion thing, I can't really enter the game if I'm not incarnating the leader of a strong, old and sophisticated civilization.
do you play countries because you like their historical superiority?
Yes, just like I explained in the last paragraph.

I can easily play as the Romans, the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Aztecs, the Carthaginians, the French, the Babylonians, the Arabs, the Japanese or the Persians.
I can also play the Chinese, but certainly not as Mao. I'm imaginating I'm an ancient Emperor of the Ming dynasty.

The others... Well, I'm not keen playing them.

When I first started to play this game...I did have preferences. I played only with th romans (I'm italian).....I never played with the americans..cuz I hate the american culture. but now..is like whatever...I play with x civ because of its UU and specific abilities

90% of the time I play the Celts because of Irish/Celtic descent. I have been playing the Vikings lately and love their UU. Sometimes I play the Americans because I am one, and occasionally I play England just because. I sometimes play the Germans as I lived there and in Switzerland for two years and speak the language. I often name the cities after the ones I lived or liked.

I rarely play other civs, but did try the Ottomans as I started in a more dry, deser climate. I don't play the French because I have never been big on French culture, but have almost always found Joan to be a great ally. Most of the other civs I have just simply never had a desire to play.

I usually play random, a lot of short games one session to the middle ages, untill I get hooked on a game. About the only time I pic a civ is if I want a practice for the Game of the month.
By going random you learn about all the different abilites, so it really makes you learn faster then just mastering one. You learn what the other civs are up to. Also playing many games just to middle ages (if that far)helps you improve thoes very important opening moves.
So regarding sterotypes, my view would be. All civs have differences to take advantage of. ;)

I do have some personally reasons not to play as Japanese and beat them up whenever I see them appear on the map... but besides that I treat everyone equally. I like the greeks, because they are commercial and scientific, and that is really powerful! I usually get raging gpt and science lead in the middle of the game, wow. The hoplite really helps in ancient confrontations as well.

The next favourite of mine is the Chinese, industrialist and militaristic is the other super combo on the other extreme... find it easy to conquer during the ancient times.

The traits of the American really suck, I agree that the expansionist trait is a waste, unless playing with a lot of goody huts... well, I usually play stand continental maps, usually 5 goody huts, then nothing to explore... F15, well, quite useless I think.

But really, why do they make Temuchen the Mogol (spelling right?) so ugly! I always exterminate his civ because I don't want to see his face!

I dislike the Aztec UU and trait combo, but I love to play them. I just like the Aztec history.

I like the French trait combo, and their UU fits in with my play style, but I will not use them. They just seem to have so little history that I am interested in.

I a have no Aztec blood in me, and while I disagree with Frances politics I have nothing against them as a nation.

My Second pick for a civ is Carthage. I loved their history as well. I will only play Zulu on the rare times I go with a random civ and get them. This is because I know little to nothing about their history.

In short, I tend to play civs that I know stuff about their history.

Recently, some folks at my company had their jobs outsourced to south asia and it's dropped moral into the toilet. I enjoy letting Ghandi have it and do more razing. So - I guess I am a little biased. On the other hand, I am a Yank and enjoy playing Persia because of the Scientific/Industrious.

I used to only play the Romans, but lately I almost exclusively play the Celts. No real bias other that for the UU's. I have tried about half of the civs and the only ones I really didn't like were England (useless UU and traits I don't enjoy) and the French (I think its more the pink thing than anything....that and I hate having to constantly surrender to the Germans). Ottomans may be my new favorite after GOTM 19.
