W do people on here think is the best unit to attack cavalry that are protecting cities?
I've been following the strategy of attacking cities with loads of trebuchets and cannons, which is quite successful.
Is there a better way though?

Riflemen will tear them to pieces, but if you don't have both grenadiers and riflemen yet then city raider pikes are optimal. They're dirt cheap, will easily beat the cav since cav don't get defensive bonuses, and will later upgrade to CR grenadiers/riflemen.

Becareful when you're up against cavalry with Pinch, though. Rifles only have +25% vs. mounted and are 1 strength lower. Cavalry with Pinch neutralise that bonus easily and might win.

any CR 3 unit with 8 or more base strength will do.
A CR pike will be fine.
Even a few CR catapult will do.

Another option are elephants.
8 base strength + 100% vs mounted.
Not overwhelming but does better than a CR 3 maceman.

^^^ Yes, but with stables (Warlords :)), theocracy, and barracks, you can get War Elephants with 2 COMBAT, and FORMATION upgrades which makes the total against Mounted Units = 50%(initial)+20%(COMBAT)+25%(FORMATION)=+95%. This means their effective combat odds (at full HP) against a cavalry are 15.6 vs 15. This will be about 60% winning chances.

CR3 Maceman are STR 8 + 75% (3xCR) only equals combat strength of 14 vs 15. That's less than 50% battle odds. War Elephant is still better.

Pikeman with CR3 is STR 6 + 100%(initial vs. mounted) + 75%(3xCR) = 16.5 vs 15 and therefore much better odds of winning.

Pikemen are the way to go if you don't have riflemen yet.
