I am playing caveman to cosmos and islam has been founded in the prehistoric wra is that a bug ?

I've never played that mod, but in the standard game there's an option "Choose religion" with which it's possible to pick the religion if you research a founding tech first. So, if let's say Saladin researches Monotheism first, there's a good chance he'd pick islam (even though it'd be judaism with standard settings).

... or it could be that someone got a prophet and bulbed it, having researched the necessary prereqs...

It could easily happen with choose religions on. It is best not to play with that on though since it changes the balance of the game a lot. C2C has another option I like though that uses prophets to found religions. You then get to choose what city it is founded in.
