cd or d/ling?

Thanks for the responses all. I was going to pre-order from a store and pick it up, but they don't allow for in-store pickups at Bestbuy & Gamespot -- they want to collect extra $$ from shipping. I'm used to having CD's/DVD's of games but am already on Steam an dif it's going to have to connect & download patches from steam anyway, why not get the game via d/l and save sales tax. In for a deluxe version (+ Babylon) & get the bonus cradle of civilization maps.

Can anyone give a good reason to get DVD instead of download? The price of boxed version is the same and digital version does not collect dust on your shelf. The only good reason that I can see is not having a credit card thus being forced to pay in cash...

some people have to watch their internet cap, 5gig is a fair chunk

Damn, I was gonna get the DVD version for the manual, only to now find out there is no manual. Ridiculous!

At this point, it could be a tad cheaper buying the hard copy depending on what stores you have around you. The Steam deal is done now, so its 50$, and during the first week of a big games release many stores will have a discount on it to try to get you in the store. I know Fry's is advertising it for 40$, will probably go pick up there or Best Buy myself.

If I'd known there was no manual with the hard copy I would have just taken the steam deal, at this point though I'll probably still buy at the store.

How do you buy Civ V on CD? It's on DVD. There is no way you can play Civ V on cd since it's made for DVD. I guess you ment that, but reading CD just seems so wrong.

I am old school, I will go to the store and buy it. At least I have steam for a back up if anything goes wrong with the disk.

Bah, humbug. The fact that it won't be available on 5.25" floppy disks is a slap in the face. I can't believe that the soundtrack isn't available on 8-track either. ;)

Anyone want to add up the number of 5.25 disks at 1.2 MB it would take for CiV?

I ended up just buying the game through steam for simplistic reasons. I wish they would of gave us Babylon instead of the cradle map crap. Oh'well

Yeah, I don't get the map packs, even if they are somehow copy-written, or have some other protection law applied to them, couldn't someone just change a minor detail and release it as a independent mod?

It's like... you pay for something and... you get something for your money.

I believe he was more referring to the risks of hackers. Though steam is fairly secure, buying anything on the internet always runs risks, especially for those who aren't particularly computer savvy.

That said I tried and tried to convince my 50 year old dad he'd be better off downloading it for his computer, but he insisted on having the disk.

So while I'll be playing he'll be at the store or on his way home from the store.

I'm one of those rebellious youngsters who's used to using 3.5" floppies (5.25" be damned!) with 1.44MB, so I'll do it for that: currently, my Civ V steam directory is taking 4,450 MB on my HDD, which would require 3,091 floppy diskettes, assuming no wasted space on any disk.

In Australia, buying it on steam costs 80USD. Buying it from ozgameshop.com (the DVD version) it's 40AUD or about 37.9USD. :)

Only if you can figure out how to get Steam to move the time up. 10am unlock for me, multiple stores that will carry it open hours prior to that, it won't take me an hour to install a game.

Honestly for me I didn't want to download it from Steam because I think they suck. I tolerate them only for the fact I can basically turn it off and "play offline" without fear of Steam screwing up or with my game while I'm playing. Sorry, wrong rant, wrong thread but someone asked why by a CD instead of download.. that's why for me.
