CE, SE, Hybrid... I'm so confused, Please Help!

All this gaseous discussion of "economies" is usually no more than a cloud obstructing the more glaring failures of beginners.
An amazing parallel to RL. Substitute 'lack of sovereignty' for 'beginners'.

This thread is an interesting read. I've learned a lot in this forum recently and have tried out several strategies, but my civing is still very much a work in progress. I've had CIV+exp for couple of years at least but now just really getting to playing the game right. Of course, I was primarily focused on the scenarios and fantasy mods. Anyway, I had a question about the race to Liberalism. I read so much about this and understand the obvious benefit of the free tech. However, what is the best free tech to pick up at this point and is there any other benefit to Liberalism? Also, what is "Mids"?

Common Lib techs, in order from "easiest&fastest to get" (aka less prerequisites) to "hardest to get":

1. Nationalism -> Taj Mahal & on the path to Cavalry & Drafting. Usually only good if no one has it yet.
2. Printing Press -> Cottage boost, on the path to Rifling and Democracy
3. Astronomy -> Ocean shenanigans
4. Chemistry -> Workshop boost, on the path to Cannons
5. Constitution -> Repr, on the path to Democracy
6. Replaceable Parts -> Lumbermills, on the path to Rifling
7. Steel -> CANNONS
Then there's Rifling, Military Tradition, SciMethod, Biology, Democracy, Steam Power... pretty much anything you can get your hands on and suits your strategy.

There's no other benefit, except you unlock 2 great lategame civics. Lib is also good for trading since it's not on the path anywhere except Communism. You should always plan Lib to nab a good tech for your current situation.

'Mids is short for the Pyramids.

thanks...ah, Pyramids. that one was driving me crazy. a good wonder that I often fail to get

You know, I kind of expected that answer. Basically, it depends a lot on your strategy seems to be the key point. I just wasn't sure if there was some super tech everyone always grabbed at that point. NOW for me to actually have a strategy...ha
