CG3, PTW, Spaceship

Eh, I'm gonna pick this one up, so I've got it. XSin, you'll play after me, then we'll wait.

Come one, is this game THAT uninviting? :(

CG

Alright, here are my exciting 25 turns. I played 5 more just so I could see if we have Iron. (We do!) Anyway, I think it would be good to join this game now, its exciting! (Got to sneak that in) My Report:

(0) OK, everything seems fine. Germany is one tech behind (Pottery), that settler has disappeared. I lower Science a notch, it won't have an effect on our turns until Iron Working (18). I normally wouldn't build a granary first in Leptis Magna, but I don't object to it. We don't even need to use Theveste in our blockade---we can run a full one with these three warriors. This will trap the workers in our lands and limit Bismarck to his own land.

(1) Full blockade in place, German workers trapped. Leipzig built in the NW tip of the island, a worthless half-city.

(2) Granary built in Utica, I switch to settler. I think we should get in one more city before war with Germany, which will probably come in XSin's turn.

(3) Damn it! I can't run the full blockade I had planned, I always miss out on the obvious squares they can enter. We could use Theveste, but they could just conquer it, and thats risky. We can just shift our warriors back and forth, that will hold him off forever. Unfortunately, this will allow the workers to escape, but they can't bring irrigation with them. By leaving a warrior on the plains, and shifting the other two, I hold back the army and the irrigation, but let the workers go. The price I must pay.

(4) Nothing. I take a while on this turn, and I notice a full blockade using Theveste is impossible, unless I am missing something. This blockade stuff is making this SG alot like chess...

(5) These Germans are smart! They use their workers as a screen to pass through, pushing the blockade deeper into our territory. An error, by me, but I can still hold them off. The line holds, but it is more towards our mountains. If Bismarck was REALLY smart, he would use the small army (archer and spearman) to sneak his workers back into our territory, but he isn't doing that.

(6) Germany has Writing, but he won't deal for it. We still have Pottery. He is annoyed, which is called for, because the AIs always get annoyed when you run a blockade. The line shifts, and Germany's army is stuck. They will probably back away soon.

(7) Another archer joins the army. I hope we can soon replace these warriors with Numidians, because they will be practically invinvible in the mountains.

(8) The army moves again. After a few more turns, they will probably do one of two usual reactions: back off or attack. I pray it is back off, because our two border cities are undefended.

(9-12) Nothing but blockading. Utica riots on turn 12; this means that we will need at least 2 defenders in every size 4 city, so its time to cut back on these infra builds.

(13-14) Nothing but blockading. Settler built in Utica, heads for last green dot, a spear/settler appear in the North.

(15) Germany will give Writing for Pottery, 9gpt, and 225 gold. I consider the deal, because we do want Map Making. I reluctantly accept. So we are even in tech now.

(16) Hamburg founded in the plains NW of Theveste. Luckily Bismarck isn't really smart. If he had settled one square south, we would have owned one of the places we were blockading in, and could have kicked us out at will. This would have given him fresh water AND allowed his army a passage south, but he didn't do it.

(18) That Bismarck is a smart one! He moves another spearman to a spot opposite the army so I can't blockade both. I decide I'll have to move the blockade west and stop the archer army from coming, and let the spearman through. Pick our poison.

(20) I'm going to play a few more turns until we get Iron Working. Hope you don't mind. We seem to have too many workers! They have nothing to do. Crap. The spearman moves right next to Theveste, it is obvious what he is going to do next turn. I decide to collapse the blockade (I can't run the blockade and defend Theveste), bring two warriors into Theveste for emergency defense, and send a Numidian north. It will take him two turns to get there. Lets pray the RNG is nice. My finger slips, I send the warrior the wrong way. While I hate to do this, I think a reload is justified. This could be huge, and I've always thought finger slips deserve a reload if their important. Hippo is built, the Numidian originally for defense that is there is sent east, to try to defend Theveste. End turn, here we go!

(21) That Bismarck is a smart one! He stalls his attack so he can get some archers in position. Luckily this also gives me time to scramble another Numid and a warrior. This gives us three warriors and a Numid for defense, with another Numid on the way. This is literally all of our defense, people. We get Iron Working in three turns (at that point I'll hand the game off, even though I like to have one player play through critical parts, we can't be selfish ;) :D) Our workers nervously do work in the back lines. ;) End turn.

(22) Germans declare war, both archers lose, our Numid loses two HP but promotes to Vet. The German spears attempt to flank us in the mountains. My first instinct is to attack them with warriors but I know this would be a huge loss. Instead, our back Numid, the one heading towards Theveste, will pull back and cover Hippo. This leaves Carthage open, but the Germans will get there in three, a Numid is due in 1, so no problem. The entire offensive attacking force is defeated, while a few freedom fighters remain in the hills. I say we hold off on the counter attack until we get Iron Working, and at that point it will be XSin's game.

(23) Hehe, I never stopped to notice the effects of this GA. 20gpt at 10% science, that is a good deal! Three Numids producedc, three more on the way. We are going into full-blown wartime Numid production, which will be switched off to Sword when we get Iron Working. Germans move deeper into our heart; apparently they are trying to bypass Hippo and head straight to Carthage or Leptis Magna. Carthage is well-defended, but Leptis Magna isn't. No problem, we'll have surplus Numids by the time they get there. I shift a Numid from Utica to Letpis Magna---Utica is farther away, and needs the Numid less.

(24) [dance] We catch a break. We have Iron, but Utica, Bismarck doesn't. I send workers to go road it, then its sword time. We can get Map Making in 21 turns at 1gpt. Not how I wanted it, but its good enough. I'm going to play one last turn, make it an even 25.

(25) The only thing the Germans can get in their march southward is our gem connection; sorry, I overlooked that. I doubt they'll actually unhook it though. Just some instructions: send those workers by Utica to road the Iron and to just hide from the Germans. After you hook up the Iron, try to switch ALL cities to Swordsmen that already have enough defenders. Just leave the German spears to do as they will, only try to keep them off the gem connection. Besides that, let them run around and fortify and act all tough. If they decide to come down from the mountains, let them kill themselves on our city gates. :D I'll post a screenshot to show our fans (come join! :D) whats happening and to show our 'Mountain Highway' that should be used for our offensive attack.

Here is a quick screenshot I took at the end of my turn. The yellow line is the best route for our troops (it isn't a direct route, but gives us only one turn on the low ground!), the blue line is a little history of the German 'offensive' ;). Here it is:

XSin, you're up. Good luck with the war. If someone wants to join, you will probably get most of the troop controlling...:mischief:

Wheres the save?

Edit : Nevermind Ill get it now

Edit 2 : You couldn't attach it because it's 101 KB and the limit is 100 KB :crazyeye:

Done Very nice turns indeed, but I couldv'e done a lot better...

(0) : Everything looks A OK except those spearmen.

IT : Korea completes the Colossus, I fear a cascade...

(1) : I move workers into position to connect iron. Time to die bismark

IT : ARGH! Bismark pillages our gems...

(2) : Numidian completes in Carthage, I keep it in Carthage because it can get to Utica before the spears can. Utica goes into disorder.... I really need to get those spearman, I change my mind and send the numid to protect our iron. Carthage starts on a swordsman. Worker mines iron (due in 6 without other workers).

IT : I forgot to change the lux tax for Utica but it goes back into order??? Cool, but the spearman go for carthage...

(3) : Change my mind and send numid back to Carthage, perhaps even to attack, they are 2.3.1... Mine on iron due in 2 turns, numid in Utica due next turn, then I will start on diplomats that will persuade Bismark with swords :p.

IT : Now the spears go for Utica, which now has a numid and 2 archers appear at our border.

(4) : Swordsman due in 6, actualy less when the iron mine completes. Numid in Theveste completes, starts on sword also due in 6. Hippo completes a numid too but starts on granary because it's disconnected from the iron due to the pillaging by the spearmen. I send a warrior up to see if it can challenge the archers, it's on a hill and theveste has 3 numids. A bunch of fortifications and that's all for this turn.

IT : The brave warrior defeats one archer but the other one kills him, it promoted and has 2 hp left.

(5) : Leptis completes numid, starts on barracks, its disconnected from the iron too. Send numid from Carthage to attack the spears who will pillage the road to our iron city, a numid will complete next turn anyway. We own one of the spearman :), I attack again with a carth numid because I feel lucky with the RNG and its not in danger at the moment. We win again! So now we only have archers from the north threataning us. I change the entertainer in Utica to work in the iron mine and we get the sword in 3 instead of 5. The workers move up to rebuild the gem road and reconnect our cities.

IT : Damn without the gems Carthage goes into disorder, I have got to get used to emperor... Bah it was because we didn't have an MP there so its my fault, but it's better then our main city losing it's iron, also its a perfect time to change from a numid to a sword.

(6) : Not much, I move both numids back to carthage, all except utica have 2 MP's.

IT : Nothing except enemy movement.

(7) : Our first sword appears, its time to say hello to our little friends germany :).
NOTE : This is great! We don't have to face pansers when we get into the modern age, it's a shame we can't get another golden age when we make our spaceship. Send sword up to front lines, another is due in 4 from carthage. Road to leptis rebuilt in 2.

IT : Nothing but archers...

(8) : Sword in Utica completes, another is due in 3. I know I shouldn't have (but archers have 2 defense on mountains!!!) but I attack an archer in mountains with our sword and we own it! Ok one down... another to go.

IT : Two more archers appear.

(9) : Sword finishes in theveste, starts on barracks (no point in regular swordsman...). We attack the other archer in our territory and kill it with the regular with no HP loss! The RNG is my friend this time. Bah I spoke too soon, I'm never attacking mountain troops again... Gems reconnected I MM Carthage to get it to grow in 2 turns, because I can :P Swordsman due in 2 now also. I feel cautious now and opt to make a road on another gem just in case.

IT : WOOOOOOOT! An elite german archer attacks our regular (both at FULL hp) and we taught it truly how to fight, our regular is now a vet heh heh.

(10) : Worker movement... swordsmen (MEN) due next turn, barracks due next turn... Damn I just noticed an elite archer next to our city, how??? I damage it losing a sword and and two warriors, damn I would restart in a normal game for being so stupid but I can't, it's not justified. In other news the dead units jack our income to 3 GPT, so some good does come out of this.

IT : Elite retreats...

(11) : two swords and a barracks done... heh not bad. I plan to attack Hamburg before handing this game off. I start an emergency road from Leptis to Utica, just in case more spearman get into our backlines. Utica also starts a barracks due in 3... Leptis is making swordsmen.

IT : The elite archer attacks our swordsmen getting ready to attack Hamburg and once again we kill off a full elite unit. Damn that's great news.

(12) : Swordsman completed in Carthage, another on it's way, only threatening unit is vet archer now, but it's no threat to the Carthaginian war machine  I decide I will attack hamburg when I have 5 swordsmen in position, I also notice that map making finishes in 4. I jack science down to get 9 GPT

IT : Germans ask to speak with us, we ask for the wheel, leipzig and hamburg for peace... they say they spit on our deal... then no peace ol' bismark. Also that threatening archer dies to our defending sword, silly bismark!

(13) : Barracks in Utica completed, I think it should pump out defense until we make contact with other civs. Theveste also completes a barracks and will be our offensive city. Egypt and Russia get the oracle and pyramids...

IT : Archer thinks it can take hippo lol. It's gonna attack next turn.

(14) : Sword in leptis complete, it starts on another. Hippo completes granary, starts barracks, we want fully improved cities if we get into another war. The sword in Leptis is actually going to prebuild for a suicide galley.

IT : Golden age ends... bah oh well.

(15) : Map making due in 3 now and we have 0 GPT... heh we attack a regular archer on plains and we get our first elite sword, it also moves to attack hamburg.

(16) : Carthage completes a sword, starts another. It is sent to Utica because it riots, darn that golden age ending isn't really that golden is it? Our elite sword dies to a vet archer that promotes to an elite with 2 hp... Bah.

IT : Bah forgot about the lux, but we have 2 MP's in Utica now.

(17) : Our back up road to Utica completes, I start a backup backup road :crazyeye:

(18) Map making completes, suicide galley due in 6, I doubt we can get the Great Lighthouse but I try anyway, literature started maybe we can nail the other GL... Lighthouse due in 31 at Utica, we may have a chance :).

(19) : I decide to attack hamburg now instead of taking overtime to attack, woot hamburg is gone and so is that pesky elite which fell to one of our regular swords again (LOL!).

IT: We get another elite sword, sent back to town to heal, carthage goes into disorder, I guess I was too happy and forgot about the lux meter.

(20) : Quiet ending turn, I sent a veteran swordsman, put it on the mountain next to berlin and fortify so we can see their activities.

Notes : I didn't raze hamburg, it auto-razed, can we make an exception so we can raze germany in favor of better city spots?

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads2/cg3-850bc.zip

Good job XSin. We pushed Germany back, a little more swords produced and he will be gone. And, NO I won't make any exceptions to the rule. We keep his city spots, bad as they might be. Thems the rules...

I'll wait 24 or 48 to see if anyone else signs up, and if not, we'll go alone for another round. :D

EDIT: I couldn't tell from your post, but did you circumnavigate the island BEFORE using suicide galleys? Its always good to do that, especially on a semi archipelago map (read: this is a semi archipelago map).

Oh. OK. Anyway, I'll just wait patiently for someone else to stumble on this thread...:(... this is the worst turnout I've ever seen in a SG.

I doubt if anyone intentionaly goes for a Space Race victory in these games...

I would think that would be incentive to play, you know, not another conquer the world SG. I guess not...(sigh)...:(...it seems people aren't even joining out of sympathy! ;)

Oh well it seems ottoman domination won't be as easy, sipahi's are bad at defending, cavalry are superior in that category.

I'm willing to join, when I get my copy of PtW in about 4(?) days. However, I'm a regent player so I think I'd only make your game excessively challenging on your turns, (an somewhat optimistic way to put it).

Great! :D Until you get PTW, we'll continue with the two person game, so I got it.. And don't worry about being a Regent player, Hygro---XSin said he was a Regent player, and we're doing great. You'll do fine. :goodjob:

I think my whining paid off...

Well, if 50% of the current CG3 team is on regent level, and doing great in emperor, then I guess I'll do fine (I'm starting to experiment with Monarch anyway:))

One important thing to remember: In emperor, the 3rd citizen is born content. We have a lux, so this shouldn't be a problem, but just remember that. Anyway, on an archipelago map, the AI landgrab speed is hindered, so its not too different.

I'm going to go play now. :)

Lots of good stuff happened, read to find out. Some obvious (death of Germans), some unexpected. This game is going to get tense, because we're going to be in a possible wonder race. Read on:

(0) Bismarck is willing to deal peace for just about everything he owns. I decide against it. Everything looks fine. I decide that our best attack plan is to fortify the sword my Berlin on a mountain, let the other two swords heal, build one more, and then move in with a stack of four. Its small, but we can't get into an extended war, and Bis has to go fast.

(1) An archer pops out of Berlin and kills our sword on the plains. I decide we'll wait on the offensive for the two swords to heal and for a few more swords to be produced. I pull a Numid out of Carthage that will be stacked with the swords. Bis may be down, but he still apparently has a few archers left, and a Numid stacked with a sword going on the mountain highway will be invincible (defense of six! :D). My long-term plan for German territory: settle on the ruin, hopefully we will auto-raze Berlin and Liepzig (they have been rushing units, both are at size one right now). If we can autoraze them, I'll rearrange the city spots, Especially Liepzig. One thing that is very unfortunate: Utica is going to be a size 5 city for just about forever. We can't bring irrigation over these mountains, and there are mostly mountains by Utica. This damn mountain range has been a hassle.

(2) Crap. I pulled that Numid out, and Carthage rioted. Strange, when I pulled it out, it showed that it wouldn't riot...I'll have to take a Numid from Theveste. The stack is almost ready.

(3) Stack is woken up, begins to move.

(4) Galley built in Leptis Magna, begins circumnavigation. Archer seen in plains, roaming. It will probably attack out stack, attack a city, or retreat.

(5) A second archer joins the German stack. It isn't a threat, and it doesn't want to attack our stack, smart. No islands seen in circumnavigation yet.

(6) A third archer joins the stack. Ooh, I'm scared! ;) Long term planning---we should move our capital off this island when we can. Most of our cities can't grow past size six, our big three can't even get irrigated. Its a pretty crappy island. Galley exploration reveals four ripe workers by Liepzig. Using slaves is not agaist the rules, BTW.

(7) The German archers turn around to try to get to our stack, but too late. Move into position to attack Berlin. A lone swordsmen in our territory will be used to clean up these archers.

(8) There is land across the sea! It is in German territory. I can't see the land, but I can see the edge of the coastline. Our circumnavigating galley is now a suicide galley. Actually, not suicide---it should get there safely. Yes! :D Attack on Belin begins. Berlin falls. We lost one sword, one injured. We captured two workers, but strangely Berlin did not autoraze, even though it was size one. Damn. Our backline sword kills an archer, stays on mountains because there were two stacked archers. Next turn will be a good one: hopefully contact!

(9) German archers head towards Berlin; they want to counter-attack. Our galley sails across the border, a blue border is spotted, identical to Germany's. It can't be them, they only have their capital, so it must be a color mix up. I plan to wait until the German archers come near, then attack them. I can't have them moving onto the mountains, so I set a worker as bait.

(10) Archer takes the bait. Our elite kills him, no GL. :( Another archer dies, vet promoted to elite. We meet Wang Kon of the Koreans! He is three techs ahead of us, not bad, and he knows the Persians. I trade him contact w/Persia for contact with Germany (they'll be dead soon, better trade them quick) and 20g. I trade Wang his WM for our WM and 15g. I hate Wang. He has a nice, long, grassy island connected with the Perians. Persia, on the other hand, is doing some OCC action in a desert. I think I placed them there, not the computer, which is why their start is so terrible. :mischief: We trade Cerimional for 115g, turn around and trade that with 75g to Persia for the Wheel. We have horses, Wang has horses, Iron, and spices. Wang has a two tech lead on us now. I lower sci to 10%, we're making 11gpt, Lit in 28. I hope to snag the GL on a trade with Wang with a prebuild, thats our best hope, becase Wang seems to be the leader in science right now, and will stay that way.

(11) The Germany army (an archer and a spear) is destroyed. Two elite victories, no GL. Rushing that GLight would be huge, but not yet.

(12) The Korean/Persian island is seen to end (I traded X-Man WM for his Wm) by Persia's city, but there is a island seen after it.

(13) Wang builds the GL. That ******. I have to switch off to a palace. If we can time it right, we can cascade to the GreatLib, but its a stretch. We finish the Palace in 16 turns, so thats our time limit. If I raise Science to 50%, I can get Lit in 15 turns at -3gpt. We need to get more cities to raise that gpt. Another elite victory (killed an archer) not GL.

(14) The sword stack is almost ready, so Bis has about 2 turns to live. Crap. I built some settlers, now gpt is down to -7. I have to lower it. We have 15 turns left on the palace in Utica. While I don't like to do this, we're going to do an open ended prebuild. Its risky, but it could pay off. Unless gpt goes up, we'll have to depend on Wang to get us Lit. If we run out of time, we're screwed, because Russia already built the Oracle (our backup). So this is a risky openended prebuild, but it could pay off.

(15) Wang gets horseback. Slip of the finger, a galley ends in the ocean. Its OK, its not a major galley, it did its job of discovering Wang.

(16) That galley dies. Another one goes on a suicide mission, there is a strip of sea heading somewhere. I wish we had this GL. Our sword stack is on the doorstep of Liepzig, its time for Bis to die.

(17) I have a very risky plan. We have 13 turns left to go on the Palace, and by lowering lux and raising science, we can get Lit in 15 turns at -2gpt. If we (I've never done this before) turn some citizens into entertainers, we should be able to delay building the Palace long enough. There are alot of variables in this: raising lux again, delaying it too much, etc. but I think the risks are worth it. Unfortunately, we can't take a citizen off production unless the city starves, so here is the plan: take a citizen, starve the city to size 4, and then put him back on. I take a citizen off Iron, that puts the Palace at 16 turns. Unfortunately, this lowers science to get Lit in 17 turns. Damn it! Alright, this plan will have to go, its way to risky. I decide to just put science at minimum and pray Wang will deal. 13 turns to go. (Note: Even though we aren't doing this plan anymore, I included it to show my thought process.)

(18) Suicide galley dies. We attack Liepzig. First elite wins, no promotion. Secod elite wins, WE GET A GREAT LEADER! Liepzig falls, Germans dead. Now, here is my plan for Hamilcar. We can stop that prebuild in in Utica, just take the shields we lost, funnel it into a Temple. We can save Hamilcar to sit and be ready to rush the Great Library the second we get Lit. Because the AIs never use prebuilds, if we get Lit around the same time Wang does, we'll be alright. I want to trade with Wang, but I have to save all my gpt and money for a trade for Lit. Leptis Minor founded. (You may notice the name of the unit that popped the Great Leader... :D)

(19) I use a nice worker leapfrog tactic to irrigate from Letpis Minor to Berlin in one turn. :D

(20) Turns over. There are some swords in our conquered territory you can rearrange, they are just healing. Our GL is in Carthage, ready and waiting. Some instructions/suggestions: Build a few galleys, some swords. If we can get the GL, we should do a nice horse/sword upgrade to knights/MedInf. We're going to need alot of Galleys, but don't build TOO many of them. If you haven't gotten the hint, we should attack Wang when we hit the Middle Ages, hopefully using our GLib revenue to do a nice massive upgrade, then taking that army to take out Wang, then moving our capital to their island and fixing all their territory (long term plan). Check Wang's techs every turn, trade ASAP when he gets Lit. If we can get the GLib, it would be absolutely huge.

Here is the save. I'll post some screenshots of our territory and the other island in a little while.

Oh yeah, I always forget about those. ;) :) Anyway, go play! :D If we get that GL, then we can just make a huge sword/horsemen army, upgrade to knight/MedInf (or make war with sword/horse, we should think about it) Wang will fall. Then Persia (obviously ;)) Then whoever else is out there...

Long-Term Plan: Get a nice large island to settler (Korea's seems perfect) move our capital there, build the FP, settler down and just ride it out peacefully, building the spaceship. :D Remember, you can build the palace endlessly, but not the FP, so its always good to be careful about where we put the FP.
