CG8 - Playing By Morals...

 You guys are worried about Charis?! He's one of the nicest, most inoffensive SG players on the planet! I can think of several SG players who MIGHT scare me to have going after me (all of who will remain nameless except for me), but not Charis!

Besides, hes allredy used up his :saiyan: moment for the month in LOTR5 :D

I can tell you from the RBP 6 and 7 games that Charis is a kind person to have coming after you. With all of the :smoke: that I pull on a REGULAR basis, Charis has been surprisingly quiet laying the :hammer: down on his teammates.

@ Ridgelake: Thats because he would have to get the :hammer: away from me first

Here there be a save:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads4/CG8-1910BC.sav

And here there be a report. No pics unfortunately. My 1.14 comp is somewhat rusty..

2270BC(1) Check out the lay of the land. Two size 1 cities, one settler and a few warriors.
Arabia is encroaching on our turf. We have one worker. We are behind in tech.
Great city locations though.
Set Madrid to Granary. Power of the people is not anything to sneeze at.
Set Barcelona to Barracks. Power of the fist is not something to sneeze at.
Steer worker towards wheatfields. Irrigating those would be a high priority.
Iros have Masonry,Wheel,Warrior Code and Mysticism and 100 coins
Arabia has same techs, but only 7 coins
Mongols have Wheel and Warrior Code, 9 coins.
Arabia would like to have all our gold (55) and 5gpt for Wheel. ouch. Would have liked to
see where horses were before plopping down settler, but decide to wait. WOuldn't want to
tie myself up to him for 20 turns, in case we would want our money for something else,
like lux.
Instead I go to Iros and fetch Mysticism for 55 and 4 gpt. Unfortunately Mongols would not
accept Mysticism as payment for Wheel. Neither will he part with Warrior Code. Miser.
Found that Madrid is working elephant, possibly for extra shields. I move citizen to
wheat instead, so Madrid grows in one instead of three. People is power.

IBT zzzz

2230BC(2) Explore some, and move settler towards spot between mountain and lake.
Move Madrid citizen out of the forest.

IBT A Barbarian warrior jumps out of the fog in the south. Fortify close warrior.

2190BC(3) zzzzz

IBT Barb moves further south into the mists. Perhaps we have a nearby camp. This could
improve our coffers.

2150BC Hmm, waste one food in Madrid, having food surplus of seven. Not much I can do about
that though. I will think really hard on the Granary thing. It may not even be necessary if
we can run a 10 food surplus, while at same time running 5 spt. Will save lots of time if
that were true.

IBT Warrior in south reappears now that I have moved my own warrior. Persistent little pest.

2110BC (5) Found Seville between lake and hilltop. Will see if Seville gets to work wheat,
or if Madrid will use it. Probably Madrid until I have had time to irrigate some floodplain.
For some unknown reason Arabia has sent two workers to work outside their cultural border.
Some checking reveals that Madrid only gets to 9 food surplus with wheat, so third wheat
goes to Sevilla for now. People is power.
Warrior disperses barb camp and is also promoted. MP in Barcelona ventures out of Barcelona
in order to be able to meet barb gar enough outside Barcelona so that Madrid MP could reinforce
should he lose.

IBT: Barb beelines towards our city

2070BC(6) Barcelona MP redlines, but wins. Time to go back and heal.

IBT Worker finally done with irrigation of wheat. I let him road before moving, since
we would need some money to go together with our people.

2030BC(7) Hmm, Madrid could use an irrigated Plains, then we would make an extra shield every three
turns. More important to irrigate wheat and possibly floodplains also. Fully possible to get
food surplus of 10 in Madrid.

IBT zzzz
1990BC(8) I bump into an English conscript warrior in the jungle to our west, south of arabia.
Time for a tech-check, since we now also have some money.
England is up Masonry, Wheel, Warrior Code and Iron working on us. 10 GC in treasury.
Mongols are up Masonry, Wheel and Warrior Code. Still doesn't have Mysticism though.
Iros have a whopping 184 gold, and are up Masonry, Wheel, Warrior Code and Iron Code
Arabia has Masonry, wheel and Warrior code.
While I do not like to feed the leader, I trade Iros 45 gc and 7 per turn for Iron Working.
I get Masonry and 25 Gold from Arabia for Iron Working
Mysticism and Iron Working to Mongols for Warrior Code and Wheel and their coffers of 9.
So for 7 gpt and 10 gold we have total tech parity. Only problem was that we fed Iros, but
Iros wanted only 7 gpt for Iron, while England wanted 8.
Min Science on Mathematics. Madrid is size 4 so I bump lux taxes a bit.

IBT: A single Arab warrior approaches our borders. Weird. I do not have any empty cities..

1950BC(9) We have horses just north of the Ivory. Only Iron I can find is far away to the east.
Iros and England have horses online. No one has any iron online.

IBT: zzz
1910 BC (10) I do not do much of anything. I will leave it to next leader if he wants to
build a worker or a warrior in Seville. I am hoping the Mongol Archer in the Jungle is doing pointy-
stick with Arabia, and not with us :)

Grimjack

Ps, Thanks for the help Charis, your Generalissimo was of great help.

The only time I've seen Charis look like this:  is when he's reponding to negative comments that others have posted.

He's a great person to pass a save to, unless he's in feast mode and up in 5 games at once! :p

-Griselda

Homer soon returned with good news to El Generalissimo "Sir, things have progressed nicely under the command of El Jefe, Grimjack. He has founded Seville, almost completed a granary in Madrid, and made good progress on a barracks in Barcelona!"

"Fantastic! A granary is just the ticket! We'll soon be on our way to setters every four seasons. Not sure if we need a warrior next or a worker from Seville - it depends how much you trust our neighbors. If happiness is the issue, getting another worker to connect Seville to our national road network (and a lux) is better than a low grade MP. A temple there to expand borders and to get ahead in the culture race would also be good, both there and at Barcelona after the rax. Temples are nice and cheap for us. It's really good to see that scout get so far East too. Maybe he'll find a hut, or a lost civilization!?"

"Sir, even better news - we're at tech parity!" spake Homer.
:goodjob: "Aye, I caught that move in his 8th year... masterful. That's what you call solid tech 'brokering', Homer. This Grimjack fellow is on top of things! When you catch up four techs for that little, it's worth it even if you have to feed the leader a bit."
(Deity tip - pick math or polytheism here, rather than writing, for a decent chance of getting a tech before the AI, as they will run up through the writing line and won't go after math or poly til a bit later)

"It's also good to see Arabia hasn't expanded any more, to the East anyway. Once we get cranking we'll get it squared away whose territory is whose! And hopefully no one will get that prime river plains spot smack in the middle of two cows and
a wheat. And heck, there's a great spot about four tiles east of that, with river, wheat, furs and game."

"Homer, give best wishes to our next leader!"
El Generalissimo

(PS Ah shucks, my pals snuck in here and spread vicious rumors about me, now I *can't* be mean  Off topic question - Ridgelake, are you one of the Amazon Basin mods? I was reading up a bit over there today and saw a Ridgelake with a hammer icon as avatar! )

Yes, the area in the east looks very promising. If we put Forbidden Palace on the spot with furs/wheat/game, then the iron would be in first ring of cities.
Of course, all those plans would go down the drain if there is an expansive civilization just out in the fogs there.

Also, the second Lux would help a bit moneywise, as we need to run lux now. HOwever, Power to the People party forced me to irrigate wheatfields instead.

Charis, that would be me. I used to be a mod over there on the Druid forums. But I stepped down from that as I don't play Diablo2 much anymore. They are a very high quality group of people. That is why I still keep in touch with them, even though I dont actively play their games right now.

And you should recognize my Basin icon :hammer:

Sorry to highjack the thread, all.

Nice writeups Charis, and good work on the tech parity, Grimjack. Charis: I never truly realized how importent it is to MM cities for maximum food/shield production. Probably because I can get away with minimal MMing on Emperor, but that won't work on Diety...

:goodjob: I plan to learn alot from this game. And to stop being lazy!!! :D

Planning before doing is usually a good thing. With this game, at this point there is not a lot to do. Basicly it seems that we want to expand and stay alive while doing it. Of course we have to assure our neighbours that we are a peacefull nation. Even tough we are kinda despotic, we try to follow the one man, one vote rule. Well for the next centuries i'l be the man .:king:
If somebody would explain what is a vote and what to do with it i'd be happy. We'll that's probably in the future.:D

Pre turn: Let's begin. Our town's are looking good. Remember the note about Seville.Warrior or worker. After a bit of thinking i opt for a worker. If we are going to expand more rapidly than the comp, we need better towns. There will be time for escorts later. Everything else is ok. Wait...we are researching writing?
I remember that the previous leader of Spain a talking about researching math. Well it is not happening. Iwas hoping for a quiet turn to get used to succession games, but I will veto writing. I assume that this was a mistake. We'll need bartering goods to keep up in science. Normally i would go for Math, but perhaps Our gloriusly nice Spaniards want to learn how to get
along with multiple gods better, than to learn how to throw big rocs at other people.
I direct our northern warrior to NW. Let's make a circle to learn more about our surroundings.

IBT: Iro's begin the Oracle, otherwise quiet.

Turn 1: Workker begins irrigating wheat. Exploring. Raise lux to prevent disorder in madrid.

Turn 2: Seville finishes a worker, I order up a warrior. we'll need escorts and a mp in the future. worker heads south towards BG.
Our warrior that has been exploring in the west meets a strange red warrior...hello ´Caesar. How are you? Oh a bit backward are we...No idea about masonry, wheel or burying your dead. with 7 gold you'll stay backward for a bit longer.
Also spot english border SW of Mecca. Remember a Venerated leader talking something about gambling farmers and Arabia expanding before fighting. The later option might be a bit closer than we thought.

IBT: We'll get extorted by....Arabia. 21 gold or war. I'll still want to keep my first turn peacful, so i pay. A mongol scout appears from NE of madrid

Turn 3: Continue exploring. Normally i allways create road with worker before moving. Now i think we need shield before mobility or gold. I move the worker straight to the BG.

IBT: English and mongols begin the Oracle. Mongol scout is running away from a barb, which is nice. Barb warrior is standing on a horse. Hope he is not learning how to ride.

Turn 4: Barcelona finishes barracs, grows and begins a warrior. Quantity before quality at this point. I redirect barcelona to go fishing instead of using the third bg. Waste loses us the fourth shield. Instead wel take a bit more gold. Warrior up North sees a yellow border. I believe it's the mongols, but i have a thing with colours. (I've allways believed that there are that many colours, no matter what everybody else says. Peach is a fruit let me tell you..) Let go check it out. Wait..we have contact with the Zulus.
It seems that not only Zhaka knows how to ride, he writes about it to his friends. (friends include also celts, germans and greeks)
Writing and HBR are now known to Iro's, and Mongols. English do ride, but don't write about it. Contact's have been traded to at least those who can write. We don't have a chance in any kind of trading. Only the romans are more ignorant than us (-Mys, wheel and masonry), but they are broke.
Let's wait. I could buy contact's, but i choose not to. They'll trade them among themselves and i think we can wait. This way we can actually have some gold if tech buying opportunities arise. We can allways buy contacts later if we need to devaluate prices further.

IBT: Barb wanders to the west. Go on to meet the arabs. Zulu offers to introduce us to the celts for 23 gold. I still decline. We might get extorted, but I'll gamble with it. Madrid grows, but stays content.

Turn 5: Nothing. No trade opportunities.

IBT: Barb decides to come towardws us

Turn 6: Granary is completed arrange to grow 3, settler is ordered in 4. Soon well really start expanding. Barb is really threatening Madrid. I'll take the warrior from barcelona and send him towards Madrid. Madrid's warrior goes to Flood plains in order to prevent barb from moving into it. Rearrange Barcelona to complete a warrior next turn. Bump lux up, so that Barcelona and Madrid wont riot(for some reason there is a lot angry muttering about something called Juventus when Mp leaves...go figure).

IBT: Barb moves next to Madrid

Turn 7: Warrior finishes in barcelona, and city is set to max growth again. Madrid gets an Mp and warrior on floodplains
is fortified. I wont attac the barb, but wait instead for it to come to us. On diplomatic front we have been introduced to egypt. They lack wheel and masonry. I sell wheel for 26 gold, in order to improve our minimal opportunities in tech buying. They'll get it
anyway.

IBT: Barb moves away from Madrid, towards ivory.

Turn 8: Seville finishes a warrior. I order up a Temple. Worker might be better, but we could use a bit of cultural pressure into Medina. I sen a warrior into the ivory title.

IBT: Barb attacs our warrior over ivory. We los a HP, but win.

Turn 9: Very quiet.

Turn 10: Settler completes. I won't move him. The next leader can decide where to settle. I order up another. We might skim a workerinstead.

Afterwords: We should be able to start trading for techs soon. Our debt for the Iroquis prevented me from making trades. Still the situation is quite qood.
+ Writing, HBR: Zulu, Mongols, Iroquis
Even: English
- Alph, MYS: Egypt
- Masonry, Mys Rome

Of course there can be more techs behind, but still should not be to big a deal to catch up. Poly in 30. There are some communications to be bought when the time is right. I don't believe, that buying them would have cheapened the techs so that they would have been affordable.

I MM the cities as well as I could. Did not write it up on every turn. Still I think it is my biggest weakness. Probably it could have been done better.
HBR is around, so we need spears and soon. Barbs on horses can be a major pain in the.... Still there were'nt a lot of barbs around. AI civ's are probably hunting a lot. Had one nice dance though.

Good luck to the next player. It's Ice Hockey and Beer for me

sorry..problems in how to upload saves... I'll search for instructions and do it ASAP. Of course if somebody would post it here it would go faster

Morf

go down to the bottom of the screen to war it says upload file. then you upload the file. then look in folder 4 for the save name. then what i do (i dont know if its the best way, but it works for me) is right click on the save name then left click on show properties. there should be an address. just copy and paste it then

That tech situation IS good Morf. Alot of Civs, most of them with different techs, I smell re-trading oppurtunities! :D

Who's up now? I'm too lazy to go back to page one...:o :D

Here's a rough dotmap I drew up. I know this dotmap is confusing, so let me explain. The Red Dot to the East could be a very good spot, with irrigated plains, hills, and some Ivory. The Red Dot to the North is the Wheat/Cattle spot. The Orange Dot to the North is another version of that city, only its on a river and is a cultural pressure city. The yellow dot to the NE is a nice spot on the water with horses. The yellow dot to the SE is a nice jungle/grassland spot on a river. The green circle is an area to put filler cities in, and the green dot to the South is a jungle/grassland city.

EDIT: Seems the upload is messed up, I upload my file and then it isn't in the list. :hmm: I'll try again later.

ok, then ill delay a little longer ;) actually i had a bball game today so i couldnt play. i will play tonight though
