Challenge #8: Super Size Me!

DaveMcW said:
Wow, this rush-Fred strategy is great. Vikky and Toku both survived, I just razed a couple cities from each to make room for my cities.

I built 5 cottages in my capital and got Biology in 860 AD. I used one GS for an academy and 4 more to lightbulb techs.

Now THAT is sick :crazyeye:

Congratulations! :goodjob:

Yup! Those populations mean he has a minimum of 51 specialists (possibly more, but at least that many if he's working every tile in those cities and has no specialist in any other city). He's obviously running Caste System, so lets assume for the sake of argument that all 51 specialists are scientists. That means with Representation those 51 specialists are producing 306 beakers per turn all by themselves. Of course, those cities should all have at least a library and probably a university, so that 306 becomes 459 beakers per turn. Throw in some commerce from cottages (since we assumed he's working all 20 tiles in each of those cities) or additional specialists, build an academy or two, observatories, Oxford University, and you've got a crazy science powerhouse.

Maaan, I almost forgot about this. I just checked DaveMcW's latest insanely humongous attempt that apparently killed this thread and I therefor declare him the biggest largest king we've ever had! :king:

Dave, if you're interested in posting another challenge, go ahead. It's your choice, although everyone can feel free to make suggestions.

Congrats again, Dave! :goodjob: And I hope everyone had a good time playing.

Fastest cultural domination victory(no war):p fastest OCC CQ victory? biggerst number of cities by XXXX? Fastest AI domination victory(space race and time shut off)? Least number of votes diplomatic victory?

Interesting ideas, but ...

Fastest cultural domination victory(no war):p

I suspect that this is only possible under very limited situations. You need a small enough map and crappy enough AI that you can continue to flip cites even fairly late in the game.

biggerst number of cities by XXXX?

Probably mostly a matter of building and saving tons of settlers until one turn before the date, then plopping them down into an ICS layout for the final turn. That way you avoid the economic problems.

Fastest AI domination victory(space race and time shut off)?

Sounds interesting. Didn't we discuss this or something like it before? Why didn't we do it?

Least number of votes diplomatic victory?

That should be a simple matter of running Slavery and whipping down to whatever amount of population gets you exactly 62% of the vote. Or do you mean lowest actual number rather than lowest percentage? I wonder how that would work.

These all strike me as full game challenges (actually hall of fame challenges), which seems contrary to the spirit of the previous competitions.

I'll drop my favorite into the ring again: most GPP accumulated by some arbitrary date.

Other ideas:

Most base hammers in a city by some cutoff date.

Fastest to discover a particular tech in the tree - or perhaps fastest to build the wonder associated with that tech?

Earliest defense pact or permanent alliance

Maximum number of civics available by some cutoff date

Largest power rating (as shown on demographics screen) by date

Fastest circumnavigation

I wonder if we should keep a dedicated thread going for a continuing discussion of future challenge ideas? Or did we already have one once.

What about a game with a later-era start? Personally, I never bother with them, as it always seems more fun to have the whole tech-tree ahead of you when you start. But for these challenges, with their specific goals and (usually) early finish dates, a medieval start (for example) could force people out of their usual strategic mindsets and maybe even show up a couple of interesting ideas for use in 'normal' games.

ps. Carl Corey, you're surely right about DaveMcW's crazymassive score and the death of the challenge. I'd been perfecting a stupidly early war-mad strategy for a few days, in the hope of coming out of nowhere to win the challenge by a couple of pop-points. Then I saw his effort.

earliest date to launch a nuke?

Largest total number of diplomatic negatives!
edit: On Deity!

Hiya.

Been lurking and shadowing some of your challenge games. You guys should seriously consider relocating out of the strategy forums, as this was the last place I expected to see competitive variants.

Most highly promoted unit sounds like it'd be interesting. Fastest played-time victory too. Perhaps an archipelligo map with most islands settled or domination-only.

Earliest date to get access to all health and luxury resources (not including hits). Terra map.

I'll be up for the nuke challenge. Even if you don't use that idea, I'll make an SG for it.
(BTW you can call the nuke challenge "Atomic Betty", after the cartoon of the similar name, the leader being Elizabeth from England )
