Challenge #8: Super Size Me!

DaveMcW: If you need assistance to set this up, I'd be happy to help. I've never won -- probably won't ever -- so this might be my only chance... ;)

Well, I never won and even so I started two challenges. :D

As for challenges, I just started another one due to two threads talking about a gunpowder slingshot. This one is on Warlords/Monarch/Continents/Normal. I didn't set any clear goals, only the request to beeline to Gunpowder and compare routes and strategies.

Warlords Challenge: What can you do with a kind word and a gun?

OK. Hope DaveMcW doesn't mind... seems like consensus forming around nuking so here's my suggestions:

Monarch (I know people are getting stuck in Warlords on Prince, but this is vanilla)
Epic Speed
3-4 Rivals (less trading, seems to make this a little bit more challenging)
Random Map (Archipelago or Islands could be fun, you may have to travel to launch your nuke)
Extended timeframe for holidays and other challenges in process already

Now leaders...
Elizabeth was also mentioned, but given this will be about teching Philo+Fin seems a little on the easy side... which may help with Monarch *shrugs*

I was thinking more in terms of traits that don't apply directly, but could be used possibly to help along and haven't come up yet: Organized, Expansive, maybe Industrious.

Thoughts anyone?

epic makes for way less replayabilety which is the biggest + of this kind of challenges...

Monarch is alright.
But I'd rather see normal speed or even quick speed.
normal size map, normal number of opponents.

Leader? FdR of course.
Map? continents or pangea is fine.

As the only nation to have actually nuked an enemy, I think we should play as the Americans. FDR, in particular, oversaw the Manhatten project.

Regarding length, we could either play on fast (I've never done) or use a Renaissance or Industrial start era (which I've also never done). I kind of like the idea of a Renaissance start, since that's about when the first colonies were kicking off, and normal speed.

Rather than "concensus", I think the winner should be able to decide. And the last time Dave spoke on these forums, he said he wanted 250 great people points without starvation.

My humble idea: how about Great Generals challenge sometime in the future? I think i've read most of succession games and challenges here but i havent seen this. If it has already been done, please point me there :).

Idea of the challenge would be like how many Great Generals you can get before conquest/domination/cv, 1AD, fascism, etc, you get the idea. Great wall and and imperialistic/charismatic trait would be the assets here. Does philo affect to birthrate of great generals too? I tried to look around, but did not find any info about that. I think this would be interesting challenge to see and learn.

I'm very new to the forum, so forgive me if this idea has been floated before.

How about fastest to generate at least one of each type of great person - one great prophet, one great scientist, one great merchant, one great engineer, one great artist (and if on Warlords one great general). This could lead to a variety of strategies for success.

Welnic,

Why do you say that generating great peolple depends upon luck, any more than any other part of the game?

It's not the generating them, it's generating the right ones. If you try to do them all in just one city then you are going to have some buildings in there that are going to contribute GP points. That means that at some point it is a matter of luck to get exactly the GP that you want. If you instead have a separate city for each GP type, that will be a sure thing but I think that it would be slower.

For example, you are going to want to have the National Epic in your main GP city, so you will always have a chance of generating a Great Artist. Sure, you could try to do the GA last, but I think that one way or the other there would be more luck involved than some people would want to deal with.

Build the Oracle, choosing Metal Casting, and put up a forge in a different city. Your first two GPs will be a Prophet and an Engineer. The rest can be controlled with Caste System.
