Is there any way to swap to a different Civ when playing multiplayer? I recently hosted a LAN where I had a nice plan in mind: have a few AI players in the game so that if someone gets taken out early, they can take over an AI player instead, otherwise it sucks being at the LAN but not being in the game. Unfortunately the game wouldn't let people switch, so we have to play the more rush-proof archipelago map type for the time being.

Since I keep reading about people calling the multi-player AIs 'placeholders' I suspect this is possible (or supposed to be). Have you tried reloading a saved game with AIs and booting the AIs out to get a human in there?

When I have reconnected to a multiplayer saved game it automatically assigns you your previous Civ and you can not change it or change which player you are, it seems that multi games remember which civ you were based on your steam tag.

So yea, even when you reload there is no way to switch.

How would you boot them out?

We had the same problem. I wonder if there's some way to hack it in the save file with a hex editor.
