Plowing through these forums it seems to me that a lot of people play a kind of standardize version of Civ. Continents, standard speed, kinda default everything. Personally I'm playing a Archi map, large, epic speed at the moment, and I'm loving loading up onto boats, plopping down like an unwanted houseguest on some nearby island, and making it mine. Load some workers onto it, leave 2 or 3 defence units per city, and pack up and do it again. The main problem I have with continents is I tend to expand until I can't, then perfect my land, then go off killing. So it works great on islands, but not so well when I can keep expanding and inevitabally gimping my economy  But back to the point, how often does everyone change up their maps, play speed, world size, civilization, etc. etc, or is it "normal" to just kind of run "the usual"

Well, the ALC games I play and post here are done with "standard" settings so we can focus on comparing and contrasting the various leaders. My off-line games are where I try different things.

I usually play Epic speed off-line, and usually a fractal map so I never know what I'm getting. Sometimes I also change the map size (bigger, always) and add more civs. I've also tried a few other maps, like inland sea, lakes, and islands, but for various reasons I've found I don't enjoy them as much.

I rarely change the game settings such as raging barbs or victory conditions, but I might take that up before long.

Lately I've also started playing the mod that adds Canada to the game, just for fun and variation (and to see some easy-to-remember city names).

I like randomizing as much as possible. I tend to stay with standard game speed, but I randomize everything else. I randomize the map by rolling a die.

Sometimes when I move to a new level, that is, prince to monarch, I will use standard and easier settings to get better, but then I move on.

I find the many map scripts a great feature of CIV IV. They are really different and interesting.

Best wishes,

Breunor

I always play on fractal since the maps can vary drastically from oddly shaped pangeas to archepeligos with large islands.

I like epic speed, and huge maps with high water level, and always a termperate climate.

The maps, and the neighboring civs is enough change for me at my point of skill in the game.

I'm trying to qualify in the Quattromaster competition in the Hall of Fame section of this website. To qualify I have to submit winning games using 11 different map types, on 9 different difficulty levels, with 4 different speeds, aiming for 7 different winning conditions, using at least 18 different leaders!

That sounds like a lot of work... I change it up from time to time, but not like that. I keep on Noble or Prince (think its those two), and have taken a liking to financial civilizations of late, as well as larger maps and slower speeds. So I guess I change but keep with a set of parameters. Like a comfort zone I guess.

I always like the Terra maps with 18 civs. Its always a race to get galleons and try to settle the other continent, which leads to some interesting diplomacy and wars later on.

I like playing on the custom continents as it varies from game to game a lot. Sometimes it can be very archipeligo, isolated continent, to stuck with 7 or more on a big continent. It's nice because you can leave the number of continents random from 2-6.
