I was lurking over at Apolyton when I saw a thread that wanted the Civ II style cheats to be brought back to Civ IV.

When Civ III came out, it obviously had no direct cheats which would put you at an instant advantage (unless you consider Chieftain level to be cheating...). This obviously seemed to be intentional.
My personal opinion is that Firaxis has moved away from that aspect of the game where cheat codes are standard (which is good, IMO).
So, would you like to see cheat codes back in Civ IV, or not? :)

no hate cheats they ruin the game

Hey if you need/have to cheat, then sure go for it, but I see no point in cheating, I mean that's like if you cheat at "solitaire" :mischief:

The only possible "use" for the cheat mode, IMHO, is as a tool for modders. But given the praise I have heard regarding the Civ3 editor, though, I don't think this is neccessary, and its integration back into Civ4 would simply leave the way open for cheaters!!

Yes, bring back the cheat menu. I didn’t use it much but it was cool to reveal the entire map now and then to see how things were going in the dark parts of the world.

I'm sure someone will eventually program a python scripted menu or something to cheat... but it shouldn't come with the game.

Cheats should not be implemented in the Firaxis shipped code. SInce they are planning to expose much of the internals to modders this time around, I'm sure it'll be easier to write a custom cheat than it was before if you are interested in that kind of thing.

if you cheat once ur liable to cheat again, then the game for yourself is ruined.
its like an elevator for a person, they used to use the stairs, but now the elevator is there they become fat and lazy.

Not to mention we'll probably have an entire scripting sub-forum devoted to making scripts.

Cheats are pretty useful if you're testing game mechanics and whatnot, although in Civ3 the debug mode works fine for this purpose. So I wouldn't care one way or another about cheats, but I would like a debug mode-type thing.

I hate cheats in games, they just ruin it for you! Thanks to the promised comprehensive editor we should be able to make our own cheats if we want to, not that we honest gamers would!

Yes, definitely!

Every once in a while, they're fun.

I don't understand how they can ruin a game. Nobody ever forced me to cheat. I never accidentally gave myself an extra unit. I was able to play the vast majority of my games without ever having to struggle with temptation.

But I want the option for when I want it. Which is generally for when a game goes truly disastrously and before I get wiped out in the ancient age, I want to give myself a tank or two and CRUSH the evil AI.

the cheat menu was more important in civ II than it would have been in III. i used to use it to make the game harder because deity had gotten too easy. but now we have more capability to mod games than we had back then so its not so important. regarding the misuse of the cheat menu to make the game easier ...

but why? isnt chieftain level insanely easy as it is? maybe not for the first time player but if he is going to be falling back on cheats from the get-go he is courting very bad habits.

now for those who say "cheat menus are for cheaters but mods are ok" i think i should point out this. the ai is optimized to play as well as it can under the standard rules. there are many ways to exploit ai weaknesses as it is but those ways become more powerful as we mod because the ai does not know how to deal with the mods. hence mods can be used to make the game easier almost as much as a cheat menu can. scenario design does the same thing. yeah yeah lets make a scenario where the player gets tanks and the ai gets archers. yup. so we effectively have cheat abilities already. its just not called that.

No need, just enter the codes, or use the editor to give yourself big advantages.
