It seams that many in this thread think that cheating or not cheating is an ethical question. Cheating is wrong, not cheating is right, cheaters are bad people and non cheaters are good people.

Using a cheat menu or cheating when you play a game in your own home, playing a game that you’ve bought for your own money can never be an ethical question. It’s only a question of what you think is fun. Cheating when you play a multiplayer game or downloading an illegal copy of the game is and ethical question on the other hand.

In many other games it is called sandbox mode, does it sound better?

I think stuff like the cheat menu was cool, I liked it in Civ2. I'm the kind of player who plays CivIII as a "coffee break game", I play it to have fun, not to develop the biggest, baddest strategy to break the ego of any AI or other player I encounter, nor to make my worlds as historically accurate as possible. And yeah, the cheat menu in Civ2 and other games like it (SMAC, CtP2 to name a few) is a good tool for modders and scenario designers. To appease everybody, why not make it an easter egg or something, like make a hidden command line parameter to enable it which disables the score system for that execution(maybe a second one to disable multiplayer as well, but for scenario designers designing stuff for multiplayer, it'd likely be better to have the option to have the cheat menu available in multiplayer). If you don't want to cheat, don't use the parameter when starting your game!

first and for most, i dont know how anyone could have fun playing civ for 15 minutes a day or as u say (coffee break game)...second of all, cheats would ruin succession games, players could easily cheat and spy on their enemies and then load up the same game as if nothing ever happened.

cheats are always abused, and ruin gameplay....

there is no need for cheats, if u want to have a coffee break game play chieften!

There should be tools for modders and designers to look at what's going on and tweak the values to see what happens. These should not be available in the regular game modes though.

Every time ive used a cheat for a game, ive hated it later: NO CHEATS!
