Chichen Itza on Imm/Dei?

Update: Now Im getting hammered by spain and iroquoi. Spain was friendly with me but as soon as I built the wonder they went to piece with Iroquoi and declared war on me. Yet when I hover my courser it doesn't say anything about them wanting the wonder i built so I guess its just a normal backstab.

That's the problem with beelining Chichen Itza on higher difficulty.
Need to have enough Military to avoid early DOWs, or use 1st lux to bribe Civ to war when you start building the wonder. Tech path only allows Ivory improvement.
Not necessary backstab. It was prob opportunistic war - too low power.

Yeah, I figured that would happen. Good thing is a GE popped and I used it to get manchu pitueh in my capital. I hate how you can never capture that wonder.

@elthrasher: interesting strategy delaying the first GA. I usually burn at least one happiness so I can get necessary wonders/units.

Military can be a bit of an issue on imm+. I usually buy enough units to hold off an attack, and then churn out musketmen and go on the warpath.

Seems to be best to save great people for later in the game, when 6 turns is enough to conquer an AI. I can get about 100 happiness a turn and really burn through those GAs.

The more cities you have and tiles you are working, the more valuable the GA will be. Of course, if you postpone it too long you might miss some opportunities. In that game I didn't have to work very hard to postpone it as I was at war basically from the start and I was picking up puppets at a good clip. Another thing to do is just sell your luxuries. I don't like having my happiness too high in the early game.

Have not played Deity cultural yet. Noticed that whenever Spain is an opponent, Isabel goes from Friendly to Hostile in less than 5 turns. Once she DOW'ed around turn 40. Since I was playing a cultural game, I didn't have much in the way of defenses up.

The 12-turn GA's with Chitzen Itza is nice. the GPT is nice, but i try to time the Piety GA or the happiness GA to occur with a wonder i am building.

in nearly every game on the Immortal level, I am for Stonehenge, Oracle, Pyramids,

In my most recent Immortal cultural game on a pangea map as Ramses II (without the aid of marble's production bonus), I got SH, Oracle, Pyramids, Chitzen Itza, Kremlin, Himeji Castle, Sistine Chaple, Louvre, Hermitage, Oxford Univ, and Cristo Redentor. Won on turn 198. My opponents were Greece, Russia, Arabia, France, China, India, and America.

China was hostile from turn 121 to the end of the game and DOW'ed at turn 129. I was allies with a CS in their area of the map and China spent the next 70 turns trying to destroy the CS. Of course, i gifted all available units to slow down China's army.

The AI loves The Hanging Gardens, the GL, CI, Forbidden Palace, Kremlin, and Himeji. I hardly ever get CI. If I get Chivalry before I get Acoustics, then I'll build Himeji. When Acoustics opens, I should have a GE which I use to rush build the Kremlin and then use the happiness GA to speed up Sistine Chapel.

If the AI gets to Chivalry first (and thus Himeji), then that usually means Education has opened up instead. So I use the GE to build Porcelain Tower. The GS's this building produces in combination with Democracy's right branch means that I should have a GS around turn 150 or so when i need to rush-tech Telegraph for Cristo.

If not Porcelain Tower, then I try to get Oxford Univ for its free tech. Since it requires a necessary building in all cities, the AI usually is not inclined to go for this. Time OU to end when Telegraph opens so that you can rush-tech Tele. By this time, i usually have at least 2 GE's hanging around to rush Cristo. Some dumbass AI always builds it to prevent a cultural win.

That being said, Cristo needs to be completed by turn 180. Around turn 190-200, some AI builds the UN or Darius or Russia are building Spaceship parts and will win by 220. i don't see how getting CR after turn 200 will win the game.

I've always found that the AI loves to build Chichen Itza. Who wouldn't? It's a rare game that it's available to build. But that might be my tech paths/early game work.

Though, it's almost always not Darius who builds it; not sure why the Persian AI doesn't stack that one.
