If the earth's pop caps it will have nothing to do with malthus. Malthus' conclusions were due to the lack of productive capacity in providing food for growth. The probability of pop capping will more likely be due to a declining birth rate which has more to do with a trend to smaller families as wealth increases.

Certainly true, which is why the US never makes it to the top of the lists of countries with the best living conditions.

Yes, 10 years would be pretty ambitious, but 50 is often a number of years that has seen quite a lot of development in the last century, tho this could accelerate like everything else, I suppose. But given the fact that US strength has always been derived from its industrial base, there is no reason to suppose its hegemony will last once a country with a higher pop achieves similar levels of development.

Yes, the chinese population is underestimated, the Chinese government has no way of counting some of the outer provinces and countryside correctly. The problem is not really the population in china, its where its gathered. The majority of population is gathered around jiangsu, sandong, and other provinces along the eastern coast.

In provinces such as Xingjiang, Xizhang, and NeiMongolia, and Quinhai, there are not that many population problems.

If you watch Star Trek, you'll know any kind of population control is unnecessary. You'll need plenty of people to colonize other planets! I bet China will regret her one-child policy in the near future.

Australia in the top 5? I don't think thats been true for a few years now...

In 98 we were counted in the top three for living conditions, wages, problems etc and then 2 years later we were down to 17.... (I still dunno why...?)

I'm an Aussie and damn proud of my country but facts is facts eh?

40% chinese? What!? I've seen a few ASIANS... but 90%+ of these are Japanese... come here to buy up our land and there aint THAT many of them (you beat me to the chase on this argument Simon! )

And yes Austrlia hasn't hit 20mil as yet, we still a few thousand shy but not far off...

If all these Indians were supposed to come over here and buy up all our "ranches" wouldn't they have to have money?

From my last knowledge India was still a third world country...? Even China has been bumped up to 2nd world and are kicking your arse! Maybe that population control aint such a bad idea eh?

A few million indians would be lass than welcomed... as said previously we have a lot of space and a lot of desert... I say we have a lot of space and nice accomodating surrounding desert to build many a nice detention centre for all your millions...

We wouldnt seriously think of overpopulating Australia anyway, it was just that our other prison colony ,the Andamans are being sold to resort companies and well, are jails are also overcrowded.
