Yeah, I can't stand Baba Yetu either. I think its a reaction to the early 90's when what was known as "world music" was all the rage. A few pan pipes and African drums and people were tripping over themselves to prove how cool they were by liking it
Yeah, a song becomes popular because it looks like it's riding a trend, and people are tripping over themselves to prove how cool they are for not liking it.
We are, I suppose, going to discount entirely the possibility that different people simply have different tastes, and some of us just like "Baba Yetu" because we like the sound of it, and not because we think liking something with African drums makes us "cool". Just because someone likes something you don't, or doesn't like something you do, doesn't mean they're being dishonest about it. It just means they're not the same person as you.
I had to read the post a few times over, but Mount Suribachi isn't saying that people like Baba Yetu because it was trendy, rather that Mount Suribachi dislikes the piece because it reminds them of the trendiness of world music in the 90s.
Not that I'm, like, endorsing Mount Suribachi's reaction to the piece or the dismissal of world music . . . but they are just stating their reaction.
