That wasn't when Jesus was on trial, it was when Pilate offered to release him instead of Barabbas. And it wasn't the Jewish leaders who said they would take the blame, it was the crowd. Of course such a ludicrously improbable scene almost certainly never really happened (it is only the extremely anti-semitic Matthew who has the crowd say that they and their children will take the blame).
