I circled the globe with my caravel and did not receive a bonus movement tile for my naval units. Is there a thread somewhere explaining this feature. For example, does the ship have to return to its home port or just get back to its original longitude? Do you have to be the first civ to accomplish this and, if so, is there any way of knowing that foreigners have already been there and done that?

yes, you must be first to get the bonus.

and if another civ beats you to it, there will be a message in the message area saying so. Those meesages can be easy to miss though.

click the button under the gold/science area in the upper left to see all messages.

cntrl/alt "something" does it too.

Thanks, vee4473.

Do you know the exact requirements as to where you begin and therefore must return to in order to successfully end the voyage?

You don't actually have to make it all the way around. You just have to have cleared a path through unexplored area that stretches all the way around. It's even possible to trade maps to reveal a path around the world and get the bonus!

I do not know that. There have been discussions saying that you simply have to uncover one square in every vertical column, but I don't know the exact mechanics of it.

If I am going for it, I just set my caravel off horizontally and hope for the best.

Requirement is to circumnavigate, you don't need to meet, you can have 1 ship travel east on top of the map and one ship travel west on bottom of map, when the latitude meet together, you achieved circumnavigate. or better yet, trade maps with AI, if the maps connect, you achieved circumnavigate too, without sending over ships.

yup... beeline horizontally across the world, and the more you've already uncovered on foot/traded for, the better. Just be careful you haven't given too much away yourself!

I usually let my first caravel go diagonal, figuring that way I see more in the same time. Don't know if that's true though...

That certainly is true, same on land - zigzagging reveals more tiles than going in a straight line, particularly since the edges of tiles give you some information.

Vee is correct, you need to have explored one tile at each longitude to get the bonus, and be the first to do so. Of course, it only applies on non-regional maps, ie those with a horizontal wrap. It may apply on tilted axis maps (for a latitudinal navigation), I'm not sure offhand.

So...

What if, when I trade maps with an AI, the maps we both get fulfills each our requirements for the circumnavigation. Who gets it then? :)

Very good question, I have no idea.

most probably the AI, cause you need wait till next turn to be considered circumnavigated. But the AI's turn comes before you.

Don't "trade" maps with the AI, put their map in the trade window and ask them what they want for it. You almost always can get their map for less than 100g.
