Considering that a Citadel 1) takes up a tile improvement 2) consumes a great general 3) quickly becomes obsolete once you've taken care of the enemy in that area. I think Citadels should be immobile units in themselves.

Give them the ability to perform ranged attacks and fend off attackers, on top of garrisoning troops, (they should behave like cities). If they are over powered add in a maintenance cost.

To be honest that is what I think Forts should do too, shorter range, weaker defence.

Wait, quick question (I'd check, but can't play atm): can you build citadels in enemy territory?

Was just thinking that one way to take a tough city would be building a citadel next to it and stationing siege within.

Edit: but yeah, generally they aren't too good. That said, GGs are amazing in this game, and I generally use extra ones for golden ages anyway.

I agree that the citadel is often useless. It would be nice to be able to mobilize it or give the GG a different task perhaps.

Because citadels are kind of a waste imo I tend to keep my generals around for the bonus increase you get having them with you other units. This brings up another gripe I have. The action button orders are kind of dangerous imo if you are wanting to keep your general around. I'm guessing it is only a matter of time before I accidentally hit "golden age" button. It would also be awesome if he could be set to alert/fortify instead of sleep.

Citadels have to be in your territory.

You're right Wi1d, it is better to use them as a general, I just wish that you could attach them, temporarily, to units. How come they can't move as fast as cavalry, I mean they are on horse back too, presumably the best horses the civ has.

Ah, bummer.

Eh, command posts never move too quickly.

I do wish the citadel gave a GG bonus to every friendly unit in it's vicinity though.

good idea really, but unfortunately it cant. It must be on your territory. But considering your question as a suggestion, it will be interesting. Lets say, when Hideyoshi under Odanobunaga set a campaign to large the mikawa territory, he build a fort just next to enemy castle divide by river. Everyone laughing at his project but later they can controling the enemy movement and behavior peacely from the castle, and arrow them if they come near the range target. Also annoy them by sending spy, attacking when they are unready, shortly his being a fly on a dish. And with that strategic, his lure the angry over-confident enemy attacking the fort, and beat them evethough being outnumber. But a fort or citadel are being capture by an artist pop singer who spread culture, lets see like celine dion sing in citadel and all the land an improvement for the impire? that is a child tale

Citadels can be quite powerful. They damage all enemy units that end their turn next to it or on it. You don't even need to defend it, the enemy will have a hard time moving its army past it.

If you find a bottleneck anywhere, place a citadel in it and send most of your army to your other neighbours to conquer them. If the enemies on the other side of the bottleneck attack you, you will not need a big army to completely annihilate their army.

Great plus: You can still put a great general on top of the citadel and give your defending unit a 125% combat bonus (145% if you're chinese).

It's probably still best to only use this if you have excess great generals and I don't think it's generally better than having a golden age.
