Citizens Initiative: Building a Harbor

We are now able to trade with Portugal. We cannot easily determine the trade route (unless M-B can with the new CivAssist) but I suspect that we are now connected to a Dutch harbor and from there through coastal waters to Lisbon. With the upcoming war with the Dutch we would endanger any trade route and our reputation.

I therefore propose that we build a harbor in Delhi to facilitate trade. Perhaps we can even partially pop-rush one there using our new citizens to quickly establish a route. As we are the only nation to have circumnavigated the world this will provide us with 2 ways to any port and the risk of breaking a trade route is significantly reduced.

Edit: too late on the pop-rush as Delhi has already been starved down to size 1.

Obtaining a harbour at the earliest opportunity is already part of the External Consulates policy for long term trade.

My position right now is this.
Portugal has ivory which we would like I guess, which requires a viable trade route with them. Building a harbour is the only way to do this. However, there are serious risks involved. Only the coastal tiles can be used for trading ATM. Once we are at war with the Dutch, their culture will cut off the anticlockwise route. Because we are at war with Japan, their cultural borders will cut off the clockwise route. I am afraid that we would build a harbour only to find we have no trade route even then. Further, If we were to make peace with Japan, then any civ that declares war on us, or even a strategically placed barb galley will cut the route and destroy our reputation.

My preferred option is to revise the Dutch war aims to include the capture of a city with a harbour plus any cities whose cultural borders overlap the coastal tiles that form part of the trade route. We can probably do this quicker than building a harbour in Delhi anyway.

I hope to push through a motion to take out the Portuguese next anyway for the pyramids and SoZ. Persia being the next big step for the game.

Wow, I really must have been something. I knew that. Mad-bax makes a good point about capturing a harbor and securing the coastal route to Portugal. If we want to build our own then we should consider Camelot or donsignia.

I've always been a fan of building harbors as soon as possible. I think a shiny new harbor for our capital city would be a good idea.

I agree - let us build a harbor soon, at the most convinent point possible. Of course, it should in no way interfere with our war preparations.

Let me add that, at the moment, it will cost us Wines and 82g to buy Portuguese Ivory. This would allow us to drop the lux slider for 20 turns, saving us 3gpt, or 60g - Ivory is too expensive at the moment.
