City Name Maps

IIRC that's also a less crappy city

Are you signed as a developer on soureforge? Anyone can download the svn, but only select people can edit it. Either way, all map changes should go through AbsintheRed as he is the one making sure things don't conflict or whatever.

If you want to make changes for yourself, then this is fine you can do whatever you want. If you are proposing changes for everyone, then we will not put cities to ahistoric locations.

I see the balance is much favored towards historical city spots, which I consider to be a good thing. However, I dislike cities being placed in suboptimal spots when I want to rule that area myself. I don't want to raze them and rebuild them every single time (which is why I feel I must reload often when playing 3000BC Japan in regular RFC), so this is an easy and for me acceptable change. But I understand that for the main version of the mod this is not ideal, so I keep it as my own modded version. On the other hand, if there is something that I think could be in the mod then I won't hesitate to post it, or give merijn_v1 a call.

Exactly. I'll go even further than that, it has 3 main advantages:

1. It is on a river. Rivers are of major importance with all the associated buildings and irrigation. There are really few cities not next to a river that should be considered good cities in my opinion.
2. More workable tiles and more food. Both are key factors in Iberia. They can be moved up to a certain level.
3. More resources, although they can be moved.

I have to admit that I am a perfectionist in these things. Playing as France, I razed more than 15 cities (beta 9) and rebuilt what I prefered. Genoa is a hard case, there just isn't one ideal location to catch the coast, river and resources.

I made new settler-maps for Poland and Lithuania. They were sorely needed, especially for Lithuania.

Also Smolensk should be moved to (84,54) (1N,1W), it is currently in a wrong location.

Thanks, I will update the SVN with the new maps, but tomorrow. I can back from my trip today and I am tired and I had some computer issues and while everything is working now, I am very tired.

Here is the corrected French/Burgundian map. Main actions were

- fixed Dijon and Lyon
- replaced Cannes with Frejus
- Fixed Alsace-Lorraine to give priority to Strasbourg, Metz and Nancy
- replaced Chatellrault with Tours
- reorganised Garonne area due to new river path

I see it's already been partially adressed.

I looked at the RFCEMaps.py file to check on some of the city names.
One thing I noticed about Burgundy was that Dijon and Lyon only have 1 tile for each city name. No wonder the AI has a hard time there :)

But besides that I noticed some changes within the German map too.
Speyer was removed in favor of Mannheim? (I think I read about Mannheim being removed)
Soest was removed and a 3rd tile for Paderborn placed?

Madrid does have 4 tiles with the name but the AI avoids building it anyway :)
(I guess Toledo is too close)

The problem with Dijon and Lyon was a cock-up of the most simple variety and for which I take full responsability.

As for the German map, you can check out the city name thread from 2 weeks ago, there was (and still is) a fair amount of debate on those changes. For instance Hamburg should have a coast square IMHO.

Lyon spawns on its own and Dijon is supposed to be the capital. You can make them one tile only, but this would work only if it is the right tile.

Another thing, Poland's spawn should be moved to (65,49) or (64,49) since the Warta river was moved. The current location really does not resemble Poznan at all.

I also posted a proposal in the Beta thread that Isle of Man province should be merged with the Hebrides and Orkney since historically they were governed as a unit (the Kingdom of the Isles).

EDIT: also Marrakesh should be (17,16)

Indeed, ATM many preplaced cities and civ starting locations are wrong
Didn't have time for it before Beta 12, but all these will be moved to be up-to-date with the recent map changes

The ones I'm aware of:
Riga, Smolensk, Minsk and Marrakesh are definitely wrong
I have to check these too, but maybe Augsburg, Salzburg, Prag, Valencia, Kharkov and Palermo?
Starting locations: Kiev, Buda, Poznan

I like that
Will change it for the next version

Don't worry, will do it if you don't have the time for it

I found the Calais issue. Cities are defined in the beginning of the Barbs.py files, but there is a trick when we check on which ones should spawn when. It used to be the case that all cities would be checked for every turn. I changed that so that the cities are split into several groups and groups are not checked outside their time period. Calais should be moved out of > 880AD group and into the < 900AD group.

I had some time so I got the new SettlersMaps (Poland and Lithuania) and I changed the Polish spawn location to match the city names.

Great, thx!

Cool. Will keep that in mind, when I have to move/add indy cities

I've been absent for awhile, I didn't get to release finalized maps for France and Germany that addressed all of these concerns. They'll be in for the next beta I think?

EDIT: I mean in version 1? :D

Welcome back, please take a look at my corrected French/Burgundian map posted above, comments welcomed!

The genoans settled on their spawn spot and founded a city namned "Zehna" or something. Is that correct? And still no Augsburg for the germans which would be one step to the right of the current city (and a far better spawn place).
