Hi, I'm new to Civ Modding but thought I'd have a go. I'm a Digital Media student so I've dabbled with many of the tools necessary to make the graphics which is mostly what this thread is about - Unique City styles.

I decided to start with the Mississippian style since the Civ4 Native City list seems to borrow from that region significantly and because I've taken an interest in that culture. It'd be usable right of the bat but also useful for a Mississippian Mod rather than a 'generic' native American civ which is what we have now with the Sioux & Mississippians mashed together.

This is a quick test made by mixing the Barracks & Incan Terrace together and manipulating a few parts. I'll fine tune it later this evening but we have a [WIP] Palace and another Mound Building -- likely something very important.:D

The standard city huts can be simply reshaped with steeper roof gables and re-textured. Many of the artwork of these Cities show many plaza's with large poles in various formations - these range from Ballcourts to Observatories and likely function as public Courts too.:)

I've also started a Benin/Edo Mod and I'm planning an Asante (Ghana) Empire Civ as well as they had a particularly distinct building style. The picture below is made from a standard eu village hut with a simple bird mesh on top. A few more polygons won't hurt. I don't know the function of these buildings but I've seen two or three clustered together in some pics so they may be a part of a complex rather than standalone buildings.

I don't have many resources for the rest of the buildings -- although I do have some written descriptions - many buildings had extensive courtyards with high walls and were decorated wall to wall with Bronze/Ivory/Wooden plaques. Although I doubt the peasants had this as to the same extent. Most buildings appear low rise in pictures i've seen, with the more important ones simply being taller one story buildings. I'm open to correction on this.;)

These houses have what appear to be panels (?) above the door -- perhaps bronze or ivory decor were placed on them. It's also possible these are second stories projecting out onto the streets like many medieval buildings. I imagine they were painted Adobe rather than wattle or wood. Colour schemes and patterns unknown. No windows pictured.

And I've yet to start the Asante buildings but there are many references online. They also have very steep gabled roofs and are often L-Shaped. Throw in some pillars/porches and we're good to go.

Any suggestions or advice? I'm trying to identify correct building styles and functions for all three Civs but of course that may not be possible.

Wow this is shaping up to be really awesome!

Like you I hated how Firaxis mashed all the NA civs into a generic "Native American Empire".

Currently I have the Mississippians share the Incan city style, since I think its the closest currently in terms of appearance, a real Mound Builder city set would be awesome, too awesome for more words!

The African set looks promising as well, Africa is very neglected...good to see more people looking at that part of the world!

I vastly appreciate new graphic artists here on Civfanatics. Welcome aboard Mudokon Pop.

Looks good so far. Can't emphasize how much how pleasantly unexpected that is, and I wholeheartedly encourage you to continue. Every new city set will definitely find a place in my mod, and I think the same is true for many others.

Thanks guys! Probably not a lot of new modders 10 years on.:D

Yes, I noticed a lot of requests for African Civs when browsing the forums. I'm having fun doing it and I enjoy reading about these cultures.

I tried making some walls but they're probably too high poly - I'll make some cuts but I also want to make it look more detailed.:lol:

This is a more detailed hut -- for the larger houses. Some of these larger huts will have fences and/or mounds. It's mostly just edited eurostyle. The texturing is what will make it distinct once I've got the specific shapes down.

Thank you. I'd be honoured. This feedback keeps me motivated.:D

Yeah we currently have two African sets, and an ancient Egyptian set. Its really amazing what alittle texture work can do. Can't wait to see yours.

What do you envision the set to look like in game, will it be a bunch of mounds or with huts as well I think right?

I can't believe Civ4 is over a decade old now...time flies.

^^ I imagine most of the ordinary huts are on the ground, while some of the larger houses in the city file will have small mounds or more than one hut on some mounds. Important buildings like barracks etc.. will have larger mounds.

The houses will be painted white with patterns like this;

Meanwhile this is the first Asante building;

I can envision already how amazing the Mississippian set will be, and nice work on that Asante building so far. What building is it by the way?

Question, in later eras what would the Mississippian cities look like? :confused:

I figure the Mississippian look would work until the Renaissance, then I wonder what set would work after that.

What do you envision the African set will look like in game?

I've been reading up on XML so I haven't made any further progress -- i copied the Asian .nif style as a template/test run but both Roman and Asian buildings with messed up textures kept appearing in the city. Couldn't figure out what I did wrong. Deleted it and starting again.

Anyways as for eras, there's no real answer. Cathokia was crumbling by 1300s onwards although some mound cities lasted much later. Ocmulgee apparently had quite a few building styles (artists may have been over simplifying their earlier recreations in general) and in the ancient/classical era there'll be more traditional round and later 'keyhole' houses.

I won't be making an industrial+ era although maybe write the xml so that some older buildings 'remain' in later eras alongside the standard ones. I'll continue this set next week.;)

I think this is a fantastic idea, new city sets for both north america and africa. :) we desperately need these, that's for sure, and i'm always interested in seeing new city sets. I personally would really like to start making more asian city sets, as I feel there are not enough, especially in the Industrial and Modern era. Actually, I was wondering, Mudokon Pop, could you tell me what programs/ plugins you use? I'm very interested to start learning, and if you would be willing to help, I would be very grateful. :good job:

EDIT: I finally got blender that can run NIF scripts on my Mac, but I'm still curious, is making city sets difficult? As of yet, I'm just reading up and practicing every tutorial. I still fully intend on making cities.
