How do they compare. They seem simlar, and I have wanted to play civ2 for a while, and my macbook is too new to handle it.

I just downloaded FreeCiv a couple days ago, and I didn't advance much past the BCs, so I may not know all.

But, in my opinion, Freeciv is better. It has:
  • Much smoother graphics
  • A "Messages" bar to keep track of what your cities/units are up too (that don't actually are pop-ups that completely stop you from playing the game). However (I'm assuming especially through the start of the game), you may accidentally end a turn without looking at the messages, but it's not that crictical.
  • Along with the messages, a chat bar for online playing and modding/editing the game
  • Speaking of online play, an actual implemented multiplayer (that isn't just an expansion) that is probably much easier and better (I haven't tried multiplayer on regular Civ2, though)
  • Better diplomatic system (maybe you can still break treaties whenever you want)
  • Quick clicks to changing the tax rates, diplomacy table, messages, and research table
  • Since you already know how to play Civ2, learning Freeciv is much easier (the controls and layout are very similar; numpad to move units, etc.)
And since it's made by the community, it's most likely made up with the community's problems with Civ2 in mind, so it'll be better gameplay.
Plus there's updates on it (it's on stable version 2.2.2 now, updated sometime in July), so your Macbook should handle it.

Sorry if it looks like I'm advertising - it's just a great game for Civ2 players, even if the regular game cost more than Freeciv. :p

Thanks! I have been playing it for a while, but wanted to know how it compares, so thank you.

Freeciv has been a very attractive alternative to Civ2 for years, but it had problems with its AI for a long time (their only AI programmer had produced absolutely unintelligible code and then vanished, so the AI couldn't be improved because no one could understand the coding). There also wasn't much of diplomacy possible with AIs, due to the same reason. I stopped following FreeCiv development a long time ago though, so it's possible that they found a way to solve this problem in the meantime. If they have, then I'd definitely recommend FreeCiv over Civ2.

By playing with civ 2 rules, would I be able to talk about the game with Civ 2er's?

I tend to prefer c-evo, though I haven't tried FreeCiv in a while.

Freeciv is no as old as civ2 but freeciv has more civilizations but ill tell you that civ2 is better because freecivv is just too quick to win and i would say that civ 2 is the better one
